마20:10-12

생명의 말씀

“먼저 온 자들이 와서 더 받을 줄 알았더니 저희도 한 데나리온씩 받은지라 받은 후 집 주인을 원망하여 가로되 나중 온 이 사람들은 한 시간만 일하였거늘 저희를 종일 수고와 더위를 견딘 우리와 같게 하였나이다”

우리가 잘 아는 본문의 ‘포도원 비유’는 노동량의 차이에도 불구하고 동일한 임금을 받은 품군들의 입장에 따라 주인에 대한 태도가 ‘감사와 불평’으로 나뉘어짐을 볼 수 있습니다. 이러한 감사와 욕심으로 인한 불평은 우리의 삶에 책망과 꼴찌라는 바람직스럽지 못한 결과를 가져오게 됩니다.

본문에서 ‘천국’은 주님의 십자가 복음 등을 뜻하며, ‘포도원’은 주님의 몸 된 교회로서, 일하는 장소를 말합니다. 초청받은 ‘일군’들은 창세전에 구원받기로 작정된 하나님의 백성을 뜻하며, ‘장터’는 하나님이 없다 하는 이방 세상을 가리킵니다. 포도원의 목적은 목재를 구함이 아니라 포도 알맹이를 구하기 위한 것으로, 교회의 존재 목적은 신령한 ‘구령사업’에 있음을 말해주고 있습니다.

포도원의 일이란 한 사람의 영혼을 찾아 구원시키는 것입니다. 그러므로 진정으로 중요한 하나님의 일이란 행위적인 것 이전에 그리스도의 말씀과 인격에 대한 ‘신뢰’임을 알 수 있습니다. 믿음 자체가 하나님의 일이기 때문입니다(요6:28-29). 오후 5시, 일이 끝나는 6시를 한 시간밖에 남겨두지 않고 포도원에 들어와서 일한 일군은 예상치 않게 하루의 품삯을 받고 너무나 감사감격하고 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 반면에 이른 아침부터 와서 하루 종일 일한 종은 더 받을 것으로 기대하다가 실망하게 되자 주인께 불평을 토로하고 있습니다. 한 시간 일한 종의 관점에서 주인은 너그럽고 후한 사람이지만, 수입의 크기에 신경을 집중하던 일군의 관점에서는 주인이 아주 불만스런 존재입니다. 맨 나중에 온자가 주인의 은혜로 첫째가 되고, 아침에 도착한 자는 불평불만으로 인해 꼴찌가 되는 인생이 되고 만 것입니다. 이것이 먼저 된 자가 나중 되고, 나중 된 자가 먼저 되는 성경의 원리입니다.

<기도제목>

인생을 감사로 바라보는 자와 불평으로 대하는 자의 차이는 칭찬과 책망으로 갈라지게 됩니다. 오늘 말씀과 같이 주인 되시는 하나님의 역사에 감사함으로 순종하는 하루가 되도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. "When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.'

We are very familiar with the parable of the vineyard. Regardless of the numbers of hours worked, all the laborers received the same amount of wages, resulting in mix reactions of thanksgiving and complaints. Obviously, a line was drawn between the two groups. The owner scolded the group with complaints.

In the scripture, the kingdom of heaven represents the gospel of the Jesus’ cross. The vineyard represents the body of Christ – the church, a place to work. The invited “laborers” are those who are predestined for salvation to be God’s children. The people who were standing idling are outsiders who believed God did not exist. The vineyard’s mission is to bear fruits, as the mission of the church is the holy works of salvation.

The work of the vineyard is to search and save the lost souls. The most important work of God is to receive Christ and respect His character. Faith is God’s work (John 6:28-29). The laborers at 5PM worked until 6PM for only one hour and never expected to receive a full day’s wage. However when they received the day’s wage, they were delighted. In contrast, those who worked from the morning expected more and were disappointed when they received the same wage as the laborers who came at 5PM. To the laborers who only worked for one hour, the owner was considered generous. To the laborers who focused on their earnings, the owner was cruel and unfair. The laborers who came later became first with God’s grace. While the early laborers became last as they were disgruntled. In the Bible, the last became first and the first became last.

"Prayer Request"

God’s judgment will be different for those who are grateful and for those who are disgruntled. Let us pray that we can obey the owner, our God with thanksgiving.
