잊어버리는 은혜
빌3:13-14

생명의 말씀

“형제들아 나는 아직 내가 잡은 줄로 여기지 아니하고 오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 좇아가노라”

‘기억’은 야누스의 얼굴처럼 두 가지 모습을 가지고 있습니다. 어떤 것은 결코 잊지말고 반드시 기억해야 하는 것이 있지만, 반면에 어떤 것은 빨리 잊을수록 좋은 것들이 있기 때문입니다. 특별히 세상적인 기억들은 잊으면 잊을수록 좋습니다. 사람과의 다툼이나 미움의 감정, 좋지 않은 기억들은 빨리 잊을 때 생산적인 방향으로 나아갈 수 있기 때문입니다.

요셉의 경우 세상적인 기억을 잊음으로 복을 받은 사람입니다. 인간적으로 보면 형제들에 의해 구덩이에 던져지고 구사일생으로 살아났지만 애굽에 종으로 팔려간 고통을 생각할 때, 아무리 형제들이라 해도 용서할 수 없고 원망과 복수심에 불타오를 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 요셉은 애굽의 총리가 되고 결혼하여 첫 자녀를 낳은 후 아들의 이름을 ‘므낫세’라 지었습니다. “하나님이 나로 나의 모든 고난과 나의 아비의 온 집 일을 잊어버리게 하셨다”(창41:51)라는 말씀에서 보듯, 므낫세란 이름은 ‘잊어버리다’는 뜻입니다. 요셉의 젊은 시절은 좋지 않은 기억들로 가득찬 인생이지만 “뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고”(빌3:13) 달려가는 믿음의 삶이 요셉으로 하여금 모든 것을 잊고 용서하도록 이끄신 것입니다.

요셉과 같이 세상적인 원망과 고통을 잊어버리는 은총은 그냥 주어지는 것이 결코 아닙니다. 그것은 자신의 마음이 ‘사랑’으로 가득 채워져야만 가능한 일입니다. 오직 주 안에서, 성령의 역사로만 가능한 일입니다. 인간적으로는 요셉의 마음이 복수심으로 불타고 있었지만 하나님께서 성령의 역사를 통해 사랑의 마음을 채워주실 때 복수의 마음이 사랑으로 덮이게 된 것입니다. “사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라”(벧전4:8)는 말씀은 이처럼 요셉의 경우를 두고 하는 말씀인가 봅니다. 요셉의 경우처럼 과거의 세상적인 기억을 다 잊는다는 것은 망각이 아니라 ‘용서’를 의미합니다. 사랑으로 덮어주고 용서로 포용하는 것이 진정으로 잊어버리는 성령의 역사인 것입니다.

요셉처럼 가족이나 주위 사람들로 인해 상처받은 적은 없습니까? 그러나 하나님의 사랑과 성령의 역사로 인도함을 받아 요셉과 같이 잊어버리는 은혜를 체험하는 하루가 되기를 기도하십시오.

Philippians 3:13-14

The Word of Life

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heaven ward in Christ Jesus.

Our ‘memory’ has two faces like Janus. There are things we mustn’t forget and remember but conversely there are things that are better to forget quickly. It is especially good to forget memories of the world. This is because we can head towards a more productive direction the quicker we forget bad memories of the world such as fights and the feelings of hatred that we harbor towards people.

Joseph was blessed by forgetting the memories of the world. When we look at him from a humanly perspective, he was thrown into a pit by his own brothers and narrowly escaped death. However, when we think about the pain that he suffered by being sold as a slave into Egypt, even if they are his own brothers we would be in rage and burn with hatred and revenge but when Joseph became the premier of Egypt and married, he named his first child ‘Manasseh’. “Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household” (Genesis 41:51). As we can see, the name Manasseh means ‘to forget’. Joseph’s s youth was a life filled with bad memories however God led Joseph to forget everything and forgive for Joseph lived a life of faith in “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” (Phil 3:13).

The grace of forgetting the hatred and pain of the world is not given freely. This is only possible when our hearts are filled with ‘love’. It is only possible within the Lord, through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Physically Joseph’s heart was blazing with revenge but when God filled his heart with love through the Work of the Holy Spirit, his heart of revenge was engulfed by love. This verse taken from 1 Peter 4:8, “Love covers over a multitude of sins” was probably written with Joseph in mind. Just like Joseph, forgetting our past memories of the world doesn’t mean we are erasing everything from our minds but signifies ‘forgiving’. Covering with love and embracing by forgiving is the work of the Holy Spirit that allows us to truly forgive.

Prayer Title

Have we not been hurt by members of our family or people around us? Despite all this, pray that you may receive the guidance that Joseph received from the work of the Holy Spirit and experience the grace of forgetting.
