그림자 있는 세상에서 그림자 없는 예수께로
전6:11-12

생명의 말씀

“헛된 것을 더하게 하는 많은 일이 있나니 사람에게 무엇이 유익하랴 헛된 생명의 모든 날을 그림자 같이 보내는 일평생에 사람에게 무엇이 낙인지 누가 알며 그 신후에 해 아래서 무슨 일이 있을 것을 누가 능히 그에게 고하리요”

그림자란 “물체가 빛을 가려서 그 물체의 뒷면에 드리워지는 검은 그늘”을 말합니다. 그런데 이 그림자는 ‘실체’가 아니기 때문에 빛이 사라지면 그림자도 없어지게 마련입니다. 성경은 이러한 그림자를 통해 인생의 허무함과 덧없음을 말하며 오직 유일한 실체인 예수께로 나아올 것을 교훈하고 있습니다.

사람의 자취나 업적도 그림자와 같습니다. 아무리 많은 성과와 업적을 이루었다 할지라도 결코 영원하지 못합니다. 순식간에 사라지고 마는 덧없는 그림자에 불과합니다. 나아가 이 땅에서 살아가는 사람들의 인생 자체가 그림자와 같습니다. “여인에게서 난 사람은 ... 그림자 같이 신속하여서 머물지 아니하거늘”(욥14:1-2)이라고 고백한 욥기서의 내용이나 “내 날이 기울어지는 그림자 같고 내가 풀의 쇠잔함 같으니이다”(시102:11)라고 한 시편기자의 고백은 그림자 같은 인생을 말해주고 있습니다.“해는 떴다가 지며 그 떴던 곳으로 빨리 돌아가고 바람은 남으로 불다가 북으로 돌이키며 이리 돌며 저리 돌아 불던 곳으로 돌아가듯 바람과 흐르는 강물, 심지어 태양마저도 그림자에 불과하다고 전도서 기자는 노래하고 있습니다(전1:5-8). 쾌락도 그림자요 술도 그림자며 사업을 크게 하는 것, 높은 직위와 많은 재물도 다 그림자입니다(전2:3-8).

한마디로 이 세상은 실체가 없는 그림자 인생입니다. 모두 다 바람을 잡는 것 같이 헛되고 헛될 뿐입니다(전2:11). 그러나 오직 예수님만이 그림자가 아닙니다. 예수님만이 영원히 변하지 않는 참된 실체입니다. 그림자는 찰나요 순간이며 무게가 없는 헛된 것이지만 예수님을 붙잡으면 영원한 세계를 소유하게 됩니다. 예수 안에서 감사하고 만족하고 기뻐하고 소망을 갖고 살아갈 때 인생의 참 행복과 기쁨을 맛보게 됩니다. 세상은 가고 그림자는 곧 지고 맙니다. 그러나 그림자 없는 영원한 하늘 나라에 소망을 두고, 예수 그리스도를 붙잡고 가는 인생은 결코 헛됨이 없습니다.

<기도제목>

그림자 같이 헛되고 허무한 인생을 붙잡는 것이 아니라 영원한 실체인 예수그리스도를 붙잡고 하늘 나라에 소망을 두며 살아가는 인생이 되기 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Lide

“And poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth.”

A shadow is “a dark figure or cast on the ground or some surface by a body intercepting light”. However this shadow is not a real ‘substance’ thus if the light disappears so too will the shadow. Through the shadow the Bible talks about the futility and frailty of life and teaches us to come before Jesus who is the only true substance.

The trace and work of man are also like a shadow. Whatever great results and work and achievement you may have done it cannot go on forever. It disappears in a brief moment like a fleeting shadow. Furthermore, the lives of people on this earth are like a shadow.

“Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1-2). Just as Job confessed and also the words of the Psalmist, “my days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass” tell us about our lives that is like a shadow. The sun rises but sets and swiftly returns to the place where it rises, the wind blows south then moves north and goes round and round eventually returning to where it began, as such the book of Proverbs is singing that wind, river and even the sun are but fleeting shadows (Prov 1:5-8). Pleasure, alcohol, owning a great business, having a high status and an abundance of wealth are all but shadows (Prov 2:3-8).

In other words, the world itself is a fleeting shadow that has no substance. Everything will become futile like trying to catch the air in our hands (Prov 2:11). However Jesus alone is not a shadow. Jesus is the only one who does not change eternally and is the true substance. Shadows are momentary and instant. They have no weight and are futile but if we hold onto Jesus we shall be able to possess the world. When you live within Jesus giving thanks, being satisfied, joyous and have hope you will be able to taste the true happiness and joy of life. The world fades and shadows disappear however the life that places hope in the eternal kingdom of heaven where there are no shadows and hold onto Jesus Christ will not be a life lived in vain.

Prayer Title

Do not hold onto life that is futile like a fleeting shadow but rather, hold onto Jesus Christ who is eternal and pray that you may be able to live a life that places hope in the kingdom of God.
