나그네 인생의 소망
벧전2:11

생명의 말씀

“사랑하는 자들아 나그네와 행인 같은 너희를 권하노니 영혼을 거스려 싸우는 육체의 정욕을 제어하라”

성경은 우리의 인생을 가리켜 나그네 인생이라 말씀하고 있습니다. ‘나그네’란 “외국인, 체류자, 고향을 떠나 객지에 돌아다니는 사람”을 뜻하므로 에덴 동산에서 추방당해 하나님의 나라를 쫓겨난 신세를 뜻하는 말이기도 합니다. 즉, ‘나간 이’에서 ‘나그네’라는 말이 왔기에, 하나님의 집을 ‘나간 이’들이 나그네 인생의 고된 길을 걷게 된 것입니다. 따라서 나그네는 본래부터 있던 인생의 모습이 아니라 불순종의 결과 추방당한 인생의 현 주소를 가리키는 말입니다.

아브라함도 자신의 인생을 가리켜 ‘나그네’라 고백하였습니다. “나는 당신들 중에 우거하는 자니”(창23:4)라는 말은 아브라함이 자신의 인생을 나그네 인생으로 인식했다는 말입니다. 이 세상을 자신의 영원한 거처로 생각지 않고 잠시 살다 거쳐 갈 곳으로 여겼음을 말해주고 있습니다. 다윗도 “내 시대가 주의 손에 있사오니”(시31:15)라고 고백함으로써 자신의 인생은 하나님의 손에 좌우되는 한낱 나그네 인생임을 고백하고 있습니다.

사람이 나그네 인생을 살게됐다는 것은 곧 예수님의 삶 또한 나그네의 길을 걷고 있음을 뜻합니다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 우리를 구원하시기 위해 종의 형체를 입고 낮아지시되 우리의 형편과 처지까지 낮아지신 분이기 때문입니다. 한마디로 죄인 된 나그네 인생들을 구원하시기 위해 당신 스스로가 나그네 인생길을 걷기로 자처 하셨습니다. 그 나그네 인생 길에서 예수님은 우리에게 “수고하고 무거운 짐진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라”(마11:28)고 말씀하시며, 당신 자신을 나그네 인생에서 참된 목적지를 향해 갈 수 있는 ‘길’(요14:6)로 제시하고 있습니다. 그러므로 나그네 인생 길에서 유일한 소망과 생명의 길 되시는 주님을 붙잡고 따라갑니다. 예수님만이 나그네의 길이며, 나그네의 진리요 나그네에게 영원한 생명을 줄 수 있는 분입니다. 예수님만이 아버지께로 나아갈 수 있는 유일한 ‘길’입니다.

<기도제목>

나그네 인생이란 말을 통해 타락함으로 나올 수 밖에 없었던 우리의 고향을 생각하고, 나그네 인생길에 구원의 길이 되시는 예수님을 붙잡고 달려감으로 나그네 인생의 모든 짐들을 내려놓을 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Hope of a Sojourner’s Life

The Word of Life

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”

The Bible refers to our life as a sojourner’s life. The word ‘sojourner’ means “foreigner, resident, and a person who has left their hometown and is wandering foreign places” and also refers to the state of being exiled from the Garden of Eden and kicked out from God’s house. Such men who have ‘left’ will walk the tiresome path of a sojourner’s life. As such, a sojourner does not emulate the original image of life but rather points to a current life of exile as a result of sin.

Abraham also referred to his life as a ‘sojourner’. “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead” (Gen 23:4). This statement shows that Abraham understood that his life was that of a sojourner. This tells us that he did not consider this world his eternal place of residence but a place of temporary residence and passing. David also confessed that “my times are in your hands” (Psa 31:15) confessing that his life is a sojourner’s life that lies in the hands of God.

The fact that a man has come to live a sojourner’s life signifies that Jesus’ life is also walking a path of a sojourner. This is because Jesus came in the form of a servant, humbling himself to our situation and circumstances in order to give us salvation. In other words, in order to save the life of a sojourner, the sinner, he volunteered to walk the life of a sojourner himself. On that path of a sojourner’s life, Jesus tells us “come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28) and is pointing to himself as the “path” to the true destination at the end of a sojourner’s life (John 14:6).

Therefore, we must hold onto and follow the Lord who becomes our only hope in the life of a sojourner. Jesus is the only path of a sojourner, the truth of a sojourner and the one who can provide eternal life. Jesus is the only ‘path’ that leads us to the Father.

Prayer Title

Pray that through the phrase ‘a sojourner’s life’, may we think about our hometown where we could only come out as fallen sinners and by only holding fast and running forth to Jesus who becomes the path of salvation in the life road of a sojourner, be able to put down all our life burdens.
