욕심을 좇는 인생
약1:15

생명의 말씀

“욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳고 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳느니라”

하루는 예수님에게 부자 청년이 찾아왔습니다. 이 사람은 스스로 모든 율법을 지켜왔다고 자부하는 흠 없는 성도입니다. 그래서 담대하게 주님 앞에 나아와 “어떻게 하면 영생을 얻을 수 있겠습니까?”라고 물었습니다. 그 청년에게 예수님은 가진 것을 팔아 가난한 자에게 나누어주라고 명령하셨습니다. 그 말씀에 부자청년은 ‘슬픈 기색을 띠고 근심하며’ 나가고 말았습니다. 이 청년의 문제는 무엇일까요? 바로 ‘욕심’의 문제가 아니겠습니까. 그래서 성경은 욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳는다고 말씀합니다(약1:15).

성경을 볼 때 이스라엘 백성들은 입에 먹을 것이 있음에도 불구하고 욕심을 부렸습니다. 40년 동안 매일 아침이면 일용할 양식을 친히 제공해 주셨음에도 불구하고 고기가 없다고 불평하고, 물이 없다고 불평하는 그들의 마음엔 욕심만이 가득차 있었던 것입니다. 성경이 기록하고 있는대로 그들은 광야에서 ‘욕심을 크게 발하며’ 사막에서 하나님을 시험하셨던 것입니다(시106:4). 이처럼 욕심이 한번 발하게 되면 하나님의 말씀대로 살지 못합니다. 그러므로 예수님의 말씀대로 우리의 정과 욕심을 십자가에 못박아야만 합니다.

구약성경에서 욕심으로 인해 멸망한 사람 가운데 ‘게하시’가 있습니다. 그는 아람 나라의 ‘나아만 장균’으로부터 거짓으로 은과 옷을 받은 엘리사의 몸종입니다. 하나님의 사람 엘리사는 아무런 대가 없이 하나님의 은총으로 질병을 치유해 주었는데, 게하시는 혼자 달려가 물질을 요구함으로써 하나님의 값없는 은혜를 훼손하는 무서운 죄를 범한 것입니다. 이 모두가 한 순간의 욕심으로 인한 것입니다. 그 결과 게하시의 몸에 문둥병이 발하여 눈과 같이 희어지고 말았습니다. 한 순간 욕심을 좇은 결과 가장 큰 불행을 온 몸에 짊어지게 된 것입니다.

욕심을 좇은 게하시, 욕심을 좇은 이스라엘 백성들의 광야여정은 결국 무서운 심판과 징계를 불러왔음을 깨닫고, 오늘 하루 욕심을 버리고 주의 뜻에 순종하는 삶을 살도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death."

One day a wealthy young man came up to Jesus. He was flawless with the law and had obeyed all the commandments. He asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus commanded the young man, to go and sell all that he possessed and give to the poor. However, the young man was saddened after he heard these words. He went away grieving. What was young man’s problem? It was the problem of greed. The Bible teaches that once lust is conceived and it gives birth to sin (James 1:15).

The Bible shows while the Israelites had food to eat, they were still complaining about wanting something else to eat due to their greed. For 40 years, God sent sufficient amount of food each morning, however the Israelites grumbled for lack of meat and water. Greed filled their hearts. Psalms 106:14 states But craved intensely in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert. Once the greed grows, we cannot live according to God’s words. Therefore, it is essential that we nail all our lusts and greed on the cross.

In the Old Testament, a man named Gehazi was ruined because of his greed. He was a servant of Elisha who lied, and received silver and clothes from General Naaman, after Elisha healed General Naaman. When General Naaman offered Elisha possessions, he did not take any. However, Gehazi ran after him and lied to receive possessions that he did not deserve - committing a great sin. This is all due to his greed and resulting in him cursed to carry General Naaman’sleprosy upon himself. Gehazi’s one opportunity of greed ended with a cursed body.

"Prayer Request"

Gehazi who followed his greed was cursed. The Israelites who followed their greed faced death in the wilderness. Let us pray that we can throw away our greed and live a life obeying God’s will.
