여호수아 갈렙의 젊은 신앙
수14:8-8

생명의 말씀

“나와 함께 올라갔던 내 형제들은 백성의 간담을 녹게 하였으나 나는 나의 하나님 여호와를 온전히 좇았으므로 그 날에 모세가 맹세하여 가로되 네가 나의 하나님 여호와를 온전히 좇았은즉 네 발로 밟는 땅은 영영히 너와 네 자손의 기업이 되리라 하였나이다”

광야의 영도자 모세가 애굽에서 603,550명을 인솔하여 나왔을 때 오직 여호수아와 갈렙만이 끝까지 가나안 땅을 밟았습니다. 이들의 특징은 언제나 하나님 편에 서서 하나님의 말씀만을 온전히 좇았다고 성경은 기록하고 있습니다(민14:24,30,38). 이들은 믿음에 있어서 하나님과 한치의 오차도 없었고, 한치의 간격도 없는 온전한 순종의 길을 걸었기에 늙었으나 청춘처럼 여전하여 하나님의 뜻을 이루는데 조금도 주저함이 없었습니다. 이를 볼 때 하나님께서 주시는 말씀을 믿을 때 믿음의 세계는 언제나 싱싱하고 청청하며 가뭄이 없다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그들은 ‘늙어도 결실하며 진액이 풍부한’ 육신의 건강과 신앙의 능력을 통해 세월을 거슬러 주 앞에 충성하며 헌신한 사람들입니다.

수14:8-9절을 볼 때 여호수아와 갈렙이 “하나님 여호와를 온전히 좇았은즉...”이라고 하였습니다. 또한 민13:30절을 보면 갈렙이 모세 앞에서 말하길 “우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라”하였습니다. 나머지 열 명의 정탐꾼은 불가능하다 하고, 반대하였지만 오직 여호수아와 갈렙만은 하나님을 믿고 당당하게 나아갔습니다. 젊은 신앙을 소유한 그들의 눈은 다른 정탐꾼들과 보는 방향과 깊이가 벌써 달랐습니다. 그 결과 똑같은 상황에서 전혀 다른 판단과 행동을 선보일 수 있었던 것입니다.

나아가 이들의 강건함은 하나님을 향한 의욕적인 믿음, 영적인 건강에서 나온 것입니다. 한마디로 하나님의 말씀을 절대 믿는 신앙에서 육신적인 강건함도 나올 수 있었습니다. 그래서 갈렙은 가장 험한 땅인 헤브론 산지를 요구해서 아낙 자손을 쫓아내고 평정했습니다(수15:14). 또 올라가서 ‘드빌’거민을 다 쳐서 멸절시켰습니다. 그 성읍에서 샘물을 발견하여 그야말로 헤브론 산지에 태평성대의 평화의 꽃을 피울 수 있었던 것입니다(수15:15-19).

<기도제목>

여호수아와 갈렙의 젊은 신앙은 그들의 삶과 운명을 갈라놓았습니다. 오늘 나의 신앙도 이들의 젊은 신앙을 본받아 힘있게 비상할 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the heart of the people melt with fear; but I followed the LORD my God fully. "So Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land on which your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God fully.'"

Among the 603,555 men that Moses led from Egypt, only Joshua and Caleb survived to walk on the land of Canaan. The Bible tells us that Joshua and Caleb always stood firmly to follow the word of God (Numbers 14:24, 30, 38). They had faith that was flawless. Even throughout their old age, they lived a life with perfect obedience to fulfill God’s will. When we think about them, we can learn when we trust in God’s words, God’s world is always refreshing and never aging. While they got older, they retained youthful energy to continue to seize every opportunity in their lives to be loyal to God’s mission.

Joshua 14:8-9 states that Joshua and Caleb followed the Lord fully. In Numbers 13:30, Caleb told Moses "We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it”. The other ten spies grumbled that it was impossible and disagreed with the plan to seize the land of Canaan, while Joshua and Caleb were confident that the plan was possible. Their eyes with their youthful faith had a different vision from the other ten spies. From the same situation, they had a different decision and action.

Their success was due to faith that leaned toward God who gave them spiritual well being. Simply, when you completely trust in God’s words then you are blessed with good health. This is evident in Caleb who asked to seize and conquer Hebron, a dangerous location (Joshua 15:14). He also destroyed the inhabitants of Debir. In Hebron, he found the springs of water to nourish the peaceful grounds filled with blossoming flowers (Joshua 15:15-19).

"Prayer Request"

Joshua and Caleb’s youthful faith separated them from their counterparts. Let us pray for blessings of youthful faith energized to perform God’s work.
