아멘의 삶
고후1:18-20

생명의 말씀

“하나님은 미쁘시니라 우리가 너희에게 한 말은 예 하고 아니라 함이 없노라 우리 곧 나와 실루아노와 디모데로 말미암아 너희 가운데 전파된 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도는 예 하고 아니라 함이 되지 아니하였으니 저에게는 예만 되었느니라 하나님의 약속은 얼마든지 그리스도 안에서 예가 되니 그런즉 그로 말미암아 우리가 아멘 하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 되느니라”

‘아멘’은 기독교의 중요한 예배 용어이며 기독교인들의 궁극적인 삶을 나타내는 생략부호입니다. 긴 말이 필요 없이 ‘아멘’이라는 짧은 생략부호를 통해 모든 것을 긍정하고 ‘예’로 화답하는 말입니다. 원래 이 말은 히브리어 ‘아만’에서 유래된 말로, ‘의지하다’, ‘진실하다’라는 뜻이며 부사로는 ‘진실로’, ‘정말로’입니다. 성경에는 직접 ‘아멘’이란 단어로 쓰이거나 아니면 ‘진실로’라는 뜻으로 번역되었습니다. 고전 5:8에서는 ‘오직 순전함과 진실함의 누룩 없는 떡으로 하자’라는 문장에서 ‘진실함’이 바로 ‘아멘’입니다. 이와 같이 아멘이 ‘진실함’으로 쓰인 구절은 고후8:8, 11:3, 엡5:9절 등입니다.

아멘의 뜻이 ‘진실하다’는 것은 거짓과 반대되는 말입니다. 계7:14에서 어린양에 대해 설명할 때 ‘진실한 자들’로 말씀하고 있습니다. 심정이 바르고 참되며 헛되지 않은 참 마음을 가리킵니다. 이것은 하나님 자신의 인격성과 예수 그리스도의 인격성을 두고 하는 말씀입니다. 이사야 선지자는 하나님을 가리켜 ‘진리의 하나님’이라 하였습니다(사65:16). 신약에서는 예수님의 말씀 가운데 ‘진실로 진실로’라는 표현을 많이 볼 수 있는데 이 또한 ‘아멘’을 번역한 말입니다. 이를 볼 때 아멘이신 하나님은 몇 가지 속성을 가지고 있습니다.

첫째는 ‘신실’입니다. 하나님은 ‘신실한 하나님’(신7:9, 사49:7)으로서 ‘변함도 회전하는 그림자’(약1:17)도 없으신 분입니다. ‘변역지’(말3:6) 아니하십니다. 변치 않으시기에 ‘어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하신’ 분입니다(히13:8).

둘째는 믿는 자의 ‘소망’이 되십니다. 변하는 것은 결코 인류의 소망이 될 수 없기에 진실되고 변함이 없으신 하나님만이 인류의 견고한 ‘소망’(고후1:7)이 되실뿐 아니라 ‘영생의 소망’(딛1:2)이요 ‘영광의 소망’(골1:27)이 되십니다. 세상은 전부 그림자에 불과하기에 결코 세상에 마음 빼앗기지 말고 영원한 소망되시고 진실하신 하나님을 붙잡아야만 합니다.

아멘이신 하나님을 본받아 우리의 삶에서 진실되고 변함없는 삶을 살아가는 가운데 오직 하나님만을 소망으로 삼도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” FortheSonofGod, JesusChrist, whowaspreachedamongyoubyus—by me and Silas and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” For no matter how many promises God has made, they are“ Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

The word ‘amen’ is an important word in Christian worship and is an abbreviation of the essential life of Christians. With just one word ‘amen’ is used as a response that means ‘yes’ and signifies affirmation to all things. This word originates from the Hebrew word ‘aman’ and means to ‘rely on’, and ‘truth’ and the adverb is ‘in truth’, and ‘truly’. In the Bible it is written as ‘amen’ or translated as ‘truly’. In 1 Corinthians 5:8 ‘therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth’; truth can be translated as amen.

‘Likewise, in 2 Cor 8:8, 11:3 and Eph 5:9 the word ‘truly’ or ‘truth’ is used in place of amen.

The fact that the meaning of the word amen is ‘truthfulness’ is the opposite of falsehood. In Revelations 7:14 the lamb is described as ‘the truthful ones. It refers to a true heart whose heart is upright and not deceitful. This is speaking of God and Jesus’ own character and integrity. The prophet Isaiah referred to God as the ‘God of truth’ (Isa 65:16). In the New Testament, we are able to discover the expression ‘I tell you the truth’ and this too is a word that has translated the word ‘amen’. When we see this we can see that God who is amen has a number of attributes.

The first is ‘truth’. God is the ‘truthful God’ (Deut 7:9, Isa 49:7) ‘who does not change like shifting shadows’ (James 1:17). He ‘does not change’ (Mal 3:6). He does not change and therefore He is same yesterday, today and eternally’ (Heb 13:8).

Second, He becomes the ‘hope’ of the one who believes. The things that change cannot become the hope of mankind thus only God who is unchanging can become a strong ‘hope’ (2 Cor 1:7) to mankind as well as the ‘hope of eternal life; (Tit 1:2) and ‘hope of glory’ (Col 1:27). The world is but a mere shadow hence we mustn’t lose our heart to the world but rather hold onto to our truthful God who is our eternal hope.

Pray that you may follow in the footsteps of God who is ‘amen’ and live a life that is truthful and unchanging, considering God your only hope.
