강하고 담대하라

수1:8-9

생명의 말씀

“이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 가운데 기록한 대로 다 지켜 행하라 그리하면 네 길이 평탄하게 될 것이라 네가 형통하리라 내가 네게 명한 것이 아니냐 마음을 강하게 하고 담대히 하라 두려워 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라 하시니라”

어떻게 보면 아무런 준비 없이 가나안 땅 앞에 200만 이스라엘 백성을 이끌고 선 여호수아입니다. 그런 상황에 여러분이 맞닥뜨리게 된다면 어떠할 것 같습니까? 성경에 직접적인 표현은 나와있지 않지만 여호수아는 무지무지 긴장하고 놀랬던 것 같습니다. 오늘 본문에서 하나님은 세 번 씩이나 “마음을 강하게 하라 담대하라”고 여호수아에게 강조하여 말씀하고 계십니다. 이는 여호수아가 얼마나 놀라고 두려워 했는가를 보여주는 단서이기도 합니다. 사람은 자신의 힘으로 불가항력적인 문제를 만나게 되면 당황하고 떨며 두려워하게 마련입니다. 가나안 앞에 선 여호수아와 같이 말입니다. 그러나 하나님은 무작정 여호수아를 향하여 ‘강하고 담대하라’고 말씀하지 않았습니다. 충분한 근거와 약속을 통해 여호수아의 마음 속에 믿음을 불러 일으키셨고 용기를 북돋아 강하고 담대한 마음을 가질 수 있도록 붙잡아 주셨던 것입니다. 그 내용이 무엇입니까?

첫째, 본문 5절에서 하나님은 여호수아와 ‘함께 있겠다’고 약속하셨습니다. 지금까지 모세와 함께 하셨던 것처럼 너와도 함께 하고 너를 떠나지 않으며 너를 버리지 않을 터이니 “너의 평생에 너를 당할 자가 없으리라”. 그러니 강하고 담대하라는 것입니다.

둘째, 본문 7-8절에서 하나님은 여호수아에게 당신의 말씀인 성경을 주셨고, 그곳에 기록된 말씀으로 인도해 주신다고 약속하셨습니다. 일찍이 모세에게 주셨던 율법책을 여호수아는 귀로 듣고 외웠던 적이 있었습니다(출17:14). 그 때 여호수아의 가슴 속에 새겨졌던 말씀을 하나님은 다시 떠올리며, 말씀으로 너와 함께 할테니 좌우로 치우치지 말고 기록된대로 행하기만 하면 형통케 된다는 것입니다. 우리와 늘 함께 하시는 하나님, 어떠한 순간에도 말씀으로 먼저 인도하시고, 그 말씀대로 행하기만 하면 형통케 하시는 하나님. 그분이 우리가 믿는 하나님입니다. 그분이 계시기에 어떤 절망적인 상황 속에서도 강하고 담대하여 승리할 수 있는 것입니다.

여러분이 처한 상황의 어려움으로 인해 혹 절망하고 있지는 않습니까? 여러분 앞에 나침반처럼 삶의 좌표로 주신 말씀을 상고하고 말씀대로 행함으로써 위기를 극복하고 문제들을 하나하나 정복해가는 하루가 되기를 기도하십시오.

Be Strong and Courageous

Joshua 1:8-9

The Word of Life

8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

In a way it seems as Joshua led 200 thousand Israelites before the land of Canaan without any preparation. How would you feel if you were in such a situation? There are no recorded accounts of how Joshua felt, however we can assume that he was extremely nervous and surprised. In today’s main scripture reading God is telling Joshua three times to “be strong and courageous”. This is a hint to how afraid and discouraged he was.

When a person is faced with a problem or a situation they cannot solve with their own powers they become afraid and lose courage. This was likewise with Joshua. God did not just merely command Joshua to “be strong and courageous”. He awakened the faith that was within Joshua’s heart through sufficient evidence and promise and inspired him with courage so that he could have a bold heart. Then how did God encourage Joshua?

First, in verse 5 of the main scripture reading, God promised Joshua that He would be with him. Just as He was with Moses, God promised Joshua that he would be with him and go with him wherever he goes and he would be “prosperous and successful” thus be strong and courageous.

Second in verse 7-8 in the main scripture reading, God gave Joshua the Bible, which is His Word and promised him that He’d lead him according to the Word that is recorded in the Bible. Joshua had heard and memorized the contents of the book of the law through Moses (Exo 17:14) so God recalled the Word he had received and kept in his heart and told Joshua to be strong and courageous and to not sway left or right as He would be with him through the Word. The God who is always present, leads in all circumstances and makes all things prosperous if we just act according to the Word is the God whom we believe in. We can remain strong and courageous even in the most dismal circumstances because he is with us.

Prayer Title

Are you dismal because of the difficulties you face? Pray that you will be able to regard the Word that has been given to you like a compass and by acting according to the Word overcome all obstacles and problems.
