생명의 말씀

“너희는 자기를 위하여 또는 온 양 떼를 위하여 삼가라 성령이 저들 가운데 너희로 감독자를 삼고 하나님이 자기 피로 사신 교회를 치게 하셨느니라”

교회는 그냥 세워진 것이 아니라 우리 주님께서 십자가에서 당신의 피를 흘리심으로 값을 지불하고 사신 것입니다. 그렇다면 자기 피로 사신 십자가의 교회는 어떤 교회일까요?

첫째, 고난의 교회입니다. 당시 로마의 사형법 가운데 십자가 형벌은 죄수가 고통을 많이 받고 죽게 하자는데 목적이 있습니다. 요세푸스의 기록에 의하면 헤롯 왕이 죽은 후에도 바리우스가 2천명이 넘는 사람들을 십자가로 처형했다고 기록하고 있으며, 이 형벌은 주후 313년 로마의 콘스탄틴 황제가 폐지할 때까지 무수한 사람들에게 괴로움과 저주와 경멸을 줘서 고통을 가해왔던 것입니다. 이렇게 십자가는 죄에 대한 고통, 죄에 대한 수치, 죄에 대한 죽음을 의미하는 것입니다. 그래서 갈3:13절은 이를 ‘저주의 십자가’라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러므로 십자가는 하나님의 사랑이 이 세상에서 겪는 고난의 표상이 되고 있습니다.

둘째, 승리적인 교회입니다. 얼핏 모순되는 것 같지만 십자가는 역설적으로 승리의 상징입니다. 그러므로 주께서 십자가에서 피로 값주고 사신 교회는 승리적인 교회에 대한 상징이 됩니다. 이러한 비밀을 깨달았던 사도바울은 선교의 과정에서 겪은 수많은 고난의 증거들에 대해 ‘예수의 흔적’(갈6:17)이라고 하였습니다. 나아가 “그리스도의 십자가 외에 결코 자랑할 것이 없다”(갈6:14)고 고백하였던 것입니다. 예수님께서도 십자가상에서 “내가 다 이루었다”(요19:30)고 말씀하신 것을 볼 때, 저주와 치욕의 상징이었던 십자가를 주님께서는 승리의 상징으로 바꿔 놓으셨습니다.

이 세상의 찬란했던 민족과 종교, 언어, 영웅호걸의 승리의 깃발도 오늘날에는 다 찢어져 없어져 버렸지만 십자가 처형이 있은지 2천년이 지난 지금까지도 세계와 모든 인류는 그 앞에서 맹세코 충성하고 있습니다. 그 이유는 그분은 우리의 영원한 승리자, 영원한 창조주, 영원한 생명의 주, 영원한 구세주가 되기 때문입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 자기 피로 값 주고 사신 교회, 십자가의 교회만이 온갖 문화와 역사의 권력을 지배할 승리의 힘입니다.

주께서 자기 피로 값주고 사신 교회는 고난의 교회요 승리적인 교회입니다. 오늘 하루 여러분의 삶 가운데서도 고난의 십자가를 회피하지 않고 기꺼이 짊어짐으로 이를 승리의 십자가로 바꿀 수 있는 역사를 위해 기도하십시오.

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God,which he bought with his own blood

The church isn’t a place that has just been set up but set up through the shedding of the Lord’s own blood up on the cross. Then what kind of church is a church that has been bought through his blood?

First, it is a church of suffering. In Rome during Jesus’ times, among all forms of punishment, the purpose of the crucifixion was to kill the prisoner whilst afflicting the most pain. According to the records of Josephus even after King Herod died Pharius crucified over 2000 people on the cross and this punishment continued on until AD 313 until the end of emperor Constantine’s reign. Like this the cross symbolizes the pain, shame, and death of sin. Thus in Galatians 3:13, it is called the “cursed cross”. Therefore the cross is the symbol of the sufferings that the love of God experiences in this world.

Second, it is the church of victory. It may seem like a bit of a contradiction to the above statement but conversely the cross is the symbol of victory. Therefore, the church that the Lord bought at the price of his own blood becomes the symbol of the victorious church. The apostle Paul who realised this secret spoke of the many sufferings that he experienced during his missions work as the “evidence of Jesus” (Gal 6:17). Also, when we see that Jesus said “I have completed everything” (John 19:30) on the cross we can see that the Lord transformed the cross that was symbolic of curse and disgrace into the symbol of victory.

The splendid civilizations, religions, languages and victories of the heroes of this world have all disappeared, however, even after 2000 years since the crucifixion of Christ, the entire world and its people are loyal before the cross. This is because he becomes our eternal victor, creator, Lord of life. Thus, the church that God has bought at the price of his own blood is the only strength that can control the power and work of civilizations and culture.

Prayer Title

The church that the Lord has bought with his own blood is the church of suffering and victory. Pray that you will be able to carry the cross of suffering within your lives so that it may change into the cross of victory.
