약1:25

생명의 말씀

“자유하게 하는 온전한 율법을 들여다보고 있는 자는 듣고 잊어버리는 자가 아니요 실행하는 자니 이 사람이 그 행하는 일에 복을 받으리라”

출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들 중 광야 40년 여정을 통과하고 가나안 땅에 무사히 들어간 사람은 오직 여호수아와 갈렙밖에 없습니다. 나머지 이스라엘 백성들의 문제점은 무엇입니까? 그들은 믿는다고는 했지만 행함이 없었습니다. 동시에 행함이 없는 믿음은 불완전한 믿음으로써, 그들의 믿음 자체가 불완전했음을 보여줍니다.

대표적으로 모세 또한 광야에서 하나님의 영광을 드러내지 못하고 불순종함으로 말미암아 가나안 땅을 바라만 보고 입성하지 못했습니다. 이스라엘 백성들의 불완전한 믿음을 보여주는 대표적인 예는 12명의 가나안 정탐꾼들의 보고에서 여실히 드러납니다. 여호수아와 갈렙을 제외한 10명의 정탐꾼들은 가나안 사람들의 체격과 광대함에 기가 질렸습니다. 그래서 스스로를 ‘메뚜기’로 비하하는 보고를 했고, 그 보고를 들은 백성들은 같이 흥분해서 모세를 원망하며 하나님을 원망했습니다. 이처럼 하나님께서 기사이적과 은혜를 베풀어주셔도 믿지 못하고 순간순간 원망과 불평으로 하나님께 대적했던 사람들이 바로 이스라엘 백성들이었던 것입니다. 이러한 불순종과 원망의 결과는 무엇이었습니까? 40년 동안 광야에서 방황하다 결국 가나안 땅에 입성하지 못하고 다 죽고 말았습니다. 그러므로 믿음이 없으면 결국 사망 뿐입니다.

그러나 여호수아와 갈렙은 온전히 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 좇았습니다. 믿음과 행함이 일치되었던 것입니다. 그래서 모세의 능력이 여호수아에게 전가되어 새로운 지도자가 되었습니다. 가나안 입성과 정복의 주인공은 모세가 아니라 여호수아가 되었던 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 말하는 것, 보는 것을 다 아십니다(출4:11, 잠20:12). 그러므로 우리가 무심코 심중에 있는 것을 말할 때, 불신의 눈으로 보는 모든 것들을 다 듣고 보시며 선악간에 심판하시는 분입니다.

<기도제목>

온전한 믿음은 행함을 동반한 믿음입니다. 아무리 믿는다 해도 행함의 열매가 없다면 죽은 믿음입니다. 여호수아와 갈렙같이 행함으로 복을 받을 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does."

Israelites exited from Egypt and spent forty years in the wilderness. Only two men that entered the land of Canaan from the original group were Joshua and Caleb. What happened to the other people? While they say they believed, their actions did not display their faith. Actions without faith are flawed; most importantly their faith was flawed.

God denied Moses from entering the land of Canaan because he did not display God’s glory and he disobeyed His command. In addition, when the 12 spies returned from their reconnaissance of the land of Canaan, they gave an unfavorable report. Only Joshua and Caleb were confident to overcome the natives. However, the other 10 spies described themselves as grasshoppers in front of the natives. The people who heard the negative report began to grieve and show resentment towards Moses and God. The Israelites were ungrateful for the miracles and grace that God granted them. From time to time, they were resentful and rebelled. What was the result of their resentment? They aimlessly wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and died before they entered the land of Canaan. Therefore, without faith you will only face death.

In contrast, Joshua and Caleb perfectly believed in God’s words. Their actions were in agreement with their faith. Moses gave his authority and power to Joshua to succeed him. Joshua became the leader for the people as they entered land of Canaan and not Moses. God knows what we say and what we see (Exodus 4:11, Proverbs 20:12). Therefore, be aware of what you say and what you see as you will be judged accordingly.

"Prayer Request"

Perfect actions are justified by faith. Regardless how faithful you think you are, without actions, that faith is dead. Let us pray for blessings of Joshua and Caleb that God granted from their actions.
