그릿 시냇가의 은총

그릿 시냇가의 은총
왕상17:2-4

생명의 말씀

“여호와의 말씀이 엘리야에게 임하여 가라사대 너는 여기서 떠나 동으로 가서 요단 앞 그릿 시냇가에 숨고 그 시냇물을 마시라 내가 까마귀들을 명하여 거기서 너를 먹이게 하리라”

‘그릿’이란 지명(地名)은 1)자른다 2)분리 3)협곡 등의 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 따라서 이 말의 뜻을 생각해 볼 때, 하나님께서 엘리야 선지자를 그릿 시냇가로 인도하신 것은 엘리야 선지자의 마음을 철저히 부수고 녹여서 하나님이 원하시는 겸손과 순종의 사람으로 만들기 위해서라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그러므로 우리 믿는 성도들에게는 각자의 그릿 시냇가가 다 있어야 합니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 자신의 심령을 찔러 쪼개고, 불같은 연단의 과정 속에서도 말씀으로 거듭나는 체험의 장소, 그곳이 바로 그릿 시냇가 입니다. 그 곳은 동시에 하나님께서 임재하셔서 당신의 백성들이 시험과 환란을 통과할 수 있도록 붙잡아 주시고 인도해주시는 은총의 장소이기도 합니다.

성경을 보면 엘리야 선지자처럼 연단과 은총이 임하는 그릿 시냇가를 다 경험했음을 알 수 있습니다. 죄악이 관영한 세대에 은혜를 입은 노아가 처한 환경은 그 자체가 바로 그릿 시냇가입니다(창6:1-8). 또한 아브라함은 창22:1-12절 말씀을 볼 때 독자 이삭을 바치는 모리아 산의 현장이 그릿 시냇가였습니다. 야곱의 그릿 시냇가는 사닥다리의 체험을 한 벧엘의 현장이요, 얍복 나루에서 천사와 처절하게 씨름했던 기도의 현장입니다(창28:10-22, 32:24-32). 모세는 미디안 광야에서 40년간 은둔하며 양치는 목자로 지내는 그 기간이 그릿 시냇가였습니다. 그곳에서 합격했기 때문에 하나님께서 떨기나무 가운데 나타나셔서 새로운 사명을 맡겨 주셨던 것입니다. 예수님 또한 공생애 시작하시기 전에 40일간 광야에서 마귀의 시험과 유혹을 받았으나 승리하셨던 그곳이 그릿 시냇가입니다. 끝으로 사도 바울도 아라비아 광야에서 3년 동안 은둔의 시절을 보냈는데, 그곳이 바로 바울의 그릿 시냇가입니다.

이와같이 하나님의 사람들은 환란 가운데서도 하나님께서 임재하셔서 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 그릿 시냇가의 체험을 통해 넉넉히 승리할 수 있었다면, 우리 각자에게도 하나님께서 임재하시는 그릿 시냇가의 체험이 있어야 할 줄로 믿습니다.

여러분의 그릿 시냇가는 어떠한 곳입니까? 엘리야나 모세 등 위대한 성경의 인물들이 하나님의 임재와 보호와 연단을 통해 위대한 믿음의 일꾼으로 거듭나는 그릿 시냇가의 은총을 여러분도 경험할 수 있도록 기도하십시오.

The Grace of the Kerith Ravine
1 Kings 17:2-4

The Word of Life

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”

The name ‘Kerith’ means 1) to cut 2) to separate 3) ravine. As such when we consider the meaning of this word, we can see that God led the prophet Elijah to the Kerith Ravine where He crushed and melted Elijah’s heart in order to make him into a man that is humble and obedient. Therefore, we believers must all be at our own Kerith Ravine. The Kerith Ravine is where our hearts are pierced and crushed through the Word of God, a place where we are reformed through the word amidst the process of training, and a place of experience. It is a place where God resides so that He can hold onto His people so that they can pass the tests and tribulations and is also a place where He leads and a place of grace.

In the Bible we see the prophet Elijah who surpassed all trials and tribulations experience the Kerith Ravine. In a time where there was widespread sin, Noah who’d been clothed in grace and the situation that he was placed in is the Kerith Ravine itself (Gen 6:1-8). Furthermore in Genesis 22:1-12 the place where Abraham offered up his one and only son Isaac on Mount Moriah was the Kerith Ravine.

As such the Kerith Ravine of Jacob, was the place of Bethel where he experiences the stairway leading to heaven and the place where he wrestled in prayer with God (Gen 28:10-22, 32:24-32). Moses wandered the Midian wilderness for 40 years and spent his days as a shepherd tending to his sheep. Because he passed the test at that place God appeared before him amidst the bushes and allotted him a new task. The Kerith Ravine was also the place Jesus was tested and tempted by Satan during the 40 days he was in the wilderness.

Finally, the Kerith Ravine was also the place where the apostle Paul spent 3 years in hiding in the Arabian Wilderness.

As such, God’s people can gain victory through the experience of the Kerith Ravine that God bestows upon us even during times of hardship. We must also experience the Kerith Ravine in our lives where God resides.

Prayer Title

Where is your Kerith Ravine? Pray that you may experience the Kerith Ravine that great people of the Bible such as Elijah and Moses did so that you too may be reborn as great workers of faith through God’s abidance and protection.
