구원을 이루시는 하나님의 열심
겔39:25-28

생명의 말씀

“그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 내가 이제 내 거룩한 이름을 위하여 열심을 내어 야곱의 사로잡힌 자를 돌아오게 하며 이스라엘 온 족속에게 긍휼을 베풀지라 그들이 그 땅에 평안히 거하고 두렵게 할 자가 없게 될 때에 부끄러움을 품고 내게 범한 죄를 뉘우치리니 곧 내가 그들을 만민 중에서 돌아오게 하고 적국 중에서 모아내어 열국 목전에서 그들로 인하여 나의 거룩함을 나타낼 때에라”

사도바울은 우리에게 ‘열심’을 품고 주를 섬기라(롬12:11)고 권면하고 있습니다. 그가 이처럼 자신있게 권면할 수 있었던 것은 하나님 자신이 ‘열심’으로 우리의 죄를 사하시고 구원을 이루시고자 역사하셨기 때문입니다. 오늘 본문 말씀처럼 하나님은 “열심을 내어 야곱의 사로잡힌 자를 돌아오게 하며 이스라엘 온 족속에게 긍휼을 베풀어” 주셨습니다(겔39:26). 이러한 하나님의 역사는 다양한 시대, 다양한 모습으로 나타났습니다.

먼저는 가인이 동생 아벨을 죽인 후 땅이 아벨의 피로 하나님께 호소하자(창4:8) 하나님은 즉각 가인을 불러 “네 아우가 어디 있느냐?” 물으시며 가인의 회개를 촉구하시는 열심을 보이셨습니다. 노아 당시에도 하나님은 홍수 심판에서 인류를 구원하고자 노아로 하여금 방주를 짓게 하시고 그 모든 과정을 진두지휘하시는 열심을 나타내 보이셨습니다. 출애굽 당시에는 이스라엘 백성들과 40년 동안 광야 여정을 함께 하면서 밤에는 불기둥으로, 낮에는 구름기둥으로 백성들의 길을 인도하시며 보호해 주셨습니다. 물이 없을 때 반석을 갈라 생수를 허락하시고, 메추라기와 만나를 통해 매일의 양식을 공급해 주셨습니다. 40년간 그들의 옷이 해어지지 않고 발이 부릍지 않도록 지켜주시는 은총은 모두 하나님의 열심의 결과입니다.

우리가 깨닫지 못했을 때는 나의 열심으로 구원을 얻고, 나의 열심으로 생활 속에서 열매를 맺은 것 같지만 깨닫고 나면 그 모든 일의 배후에 하나님의 열심이 있었기 때문에 가능했다는 것을 알게됩니다. “내가 열심을 내어 돌아오게 하며, 내가 그들을 만민 중에서 돌아오게 하고, 내가 그들을 모아 고토로 돌아오게 하고...”라는 말씀은 하나님의 주도적인 열심이 우리를 구원하시고 긍휼을 베풀어 주시겠다는 선포입니다. 이러한 하나님의 열심을 품고 이제는 주님을 섬기는 참 성도가 되어야겠습니다.

<기도제목>

내가 어떠한 죄악 가운데 있더라도 하나님의 열심은 능히 나를 죄 중에서 건지시고 회복하사 구원의 은총과 긍휼을 베풀어 주십니다. 하나님의 열심으로 구원받았으니 이제는 그 열심으로 하나님을 위해 충성하는 하루가 되도록 기도하십시오.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Now I shall restore the fortunes of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I shall be jealous for My holy name. "And they shall forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their [own] land with no one to make them afraid. "When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. "Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them [again] to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer.

The apostle Paul is teaching us to have ‘zeal’ in serving the Lord (Rom 12:11). The reason He was able to teach us this lesson with such confidence was because God Himself atoned for our sins and worked in order to fulfill salvation. Just like today’s main scripture reading God’s zealousness brought back those who were enslaved by Jacob and showed mercy to all the Israelites (Ezk 39:26). Such work of God was manifested in various time periods and forms.

First, when Cain killed his younger brother Abel and Abel’s blood cried out from the ground (Gen 4:8), God immediately called Cain and asked “where is your brother?” and showed zeal in hastening Cain’s repentance. Also in the days of Noah, God built the Ark through Noah and orchestrated every step in order to achieve salvation. At the time of exodus, He was with the Israelites day and night through the pillar of clouds and fire leading the way and protecting them. When there was no water He provided water and through quails and manna He provided them with daily nutrition. For 40 years their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not produce blisters. This grace that kept them was the result of God’s zeal.

When we could not understand, we thought that we gained salvation through our efforts and bore fruit through our zeal but after we realise we know that behind everything was the zeal of God that made all things possible. Just as it is written “my zeal will make them return amongst all nations and I will gather them and make them return...” the dominant zeal of God is a proclamation that He’ll give us salvation and show us mercy. We must carry the zeal of God and become true saints who serve the Lord.

Prayer Title

Whatever sins you may have the zeal of God lifts us up from sin, restores us and bestows the grace and mercy of salvation upon us. Now that we have received salvation through the zealousness of God pray that you may be able to serve God with zeal.
