생수의 근원이신 그리스도
요7:37-39

생명의 말씀

“명절 끝날 곧 큰 날에 예수께서 서서 외쳐 가라사대 누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라나를 믿는 자는 성경에 이름과 같이 그 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러나리라 하시니 이는 그를 믿는 자의 받을 성령을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이라 (예수께서 아직 영광을 받지 못하신 고로 성령이 아직 저희에게 계시지 아니하시더라)”

수가성 여인을 만나 ‘영생하도록 솟아내는 샘물’을 허락하신 예수님은 영적 목마름에 처해있는 인류의 갈증을 해결해 주고자 함이었습니다. 이처럼 인류에게 생수를 허락하신 하나님은 생수의 깊은 ‘수원지’가 되었던 반석을 가리켜 ‘그리스도’라고 하였습니다(고전10:4).

그리스도의 생수는 폭포수처럼 솟아나는 생수입니다. 민20:11절에서 공동번역 성경은 “모세가 손을 들어 지팡이로 그 바위를 두 번 치니 물이 콸콸 터져 나왔다”고 하였습니다. 광야에서 물을 먹이시되 폭포수처럼 콸콸 솟아나게 하셨다는 것은 그만큼 풍족하고 넉넉하다는 것을 뜻합니다. 온 백성이 마시고도 남는 생수를 광야에서 허락해 주신 것입니다. 예수님은 “나를 믿는 자는 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러 넘치리라”(요7:38)고 하셨듯이, 생수의 근원되신 예수님을 믿을 때 우리의 삶 가운데도 생수의 역사가 폭포수와 같이 임하게 됩니다.

그리스도의 생수는 모든 백성에게 흡족히 마시우는 생수입니다. ‘흡족히’라는 말은 만족스럽다는 뜻입니다. 모자라게 찔끔 마시는 것이 아니라 넉넉하게 마시고도 남음이 있는 것, 그래서 육신과 영혼이 만족함을 얻는 것이 ‘흡족’입니다. 시편 기자는 “저희에게 물을 흡족히 마시우셨으며”(시78:15)라고 하였습니다. 무엇을 먹을까, 무엇을 마실까, 무엇을 입을까 염려하는 것은 모자라기 때문입니다. 그러나 주께는 모든 것이 풍족하기에 “누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라!”(요7:37)고 자신있게 초청하고 있습니다.

종말에 예수께서는 샘물 근원으로 백성들을 인도하십니다. 생명의 샘물 ‘근원’으로까지 인도할 때 더위와 볕이 결코 성도를 상하게 하지 못합니다(사49:10). 샘 근원은 온 광야를 적시고 온 인류를 먹이는 생명수의 근원을 뜻합니다. 이 물은 장차 성전 문지방에서 흘러 나와 온 인류를 적시는 구원의 물이요 생명의 물입니다(겔47:1). 예수님은 이 생명수 샘물 근원으로 우리를 인도하사 목마른 자에게 값없이 주시되 흡족히 마실 수 있도록 허락하시는 사랑의 주님입니다.

John 7:37-39

The Word of Life

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, river so fliving water will flow from with in them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Jesus who allowed the ‘rivers of living water’ to the Samaritan woman did so in order to quench the spiritual thirst of mankind. As such Jesus who allowed mankind the living water pointed to the rock that became a deep ‘catchment area’ for God’s living water and called it ‘Christ’ (1 Cor 10:4).

The living waters of Christ are like waters that swell up like a fountain. In Numbers 20:11 it is written “then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank”. The fact that He provided them with water in the wilderness and let it gush out like a waterfall signifies that they it was abundant and plentiful He supplied enough water for all of the people to drink and spare in the wilderness. Just as Jesus said “whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38), when we believe in Jesus who is the origin of living water the work of the living water will come upon our lives like a waterfall.

The living waters of Christ is a water that allows all His people to drink to their hearts content and still have enough to spare. They don’t just take sips of water that isn’t enough but rather they drink a plentiful amount and still have enough water remaining, therefore ‘satisfaction’ here refers to both the flesh and spirit being satisfied. The author of Psalms says “He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas” 9Psa 78:15). This is because even worrying about what to eat, drink and wear is what we do when we experience insufficiency but all things are abundant to the Lord thus He confidently invites “let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink” (John 7:37).

In the end times Jesus leads his people to the origin of the living water. When he leads us to the ‘origin’ of the living waters of life, the heat nor the sun can beat down on them (Isa 49:10). The origin of water signifies the living water that drenches the wilderness and lets all mankind drink. This water is the water of salvation and life that will soak all mankind and will come out from under the threshold of the temple (Ezk 47:1). Jesus is the Lord of love who being the origin of living water, providing water to those who are thirsty without charge and leads us so we may drink until our hearts content.

Do you have any worries or difficulties in your life? May you go forth to the Lord who is the origin of living water and drink the water he provides so that it may quench your thirst and lead you to the origin of the living water.
