생명의 말씀

“그 사면의 도합이 일만 팔천척이라 그 날 후로는 그 성읍의 이름을 여호와삼마라 하리라”

구약성경에 보면 하나님의 성품을 알려주는 이름들이 많이 나옵니다. ‘여호와 샬롬’(여호와는 평강), ‘여호와 닛시’(여호와는 나의 깃발), ‘여호와 이레’(여호와께서 준비하심), ‘여호와 라파’(치료하시는 하나님) 등, ‘여호와’라는 이름에 다른 단어를 붙여서 많든 이러한 합성어는 하나님의 성품과 속성을 잘 드러내주고 있습니다. 이러한 이름들 가운데서도 특별히 ‘여호와 삼마’는 ‘거기에 계시는 하나님’이라는 뜻으로 백성들과 함께해 주시는 하나님의 속성을 말해주고 있습니다.

‘여호와 삼마’라 할 때, ‘삼마’라는 히브리어는 ‘거기에’, ‘그곳으로’, ‘그 때에’ 등의 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 그러므로 여호와 삼마라는 말은 신약에서 예수 그리스도의 별칭으로 사용된 ‘임마누엘’과 같은 뜻입니다. 둘 다 성도들의 삶 속에 함께 하시는 하나님의 축복을 의미하기 때문입니다.

본문에서 에스겔 선지자는 바벨론 포로로 인해 절망과 비탄으로 암흑의 나날을 보내는 이스라엘 백성들에게 ‘여호와 삼마’의 하나님을 선포함으로써 소망과 용기를 심어줬습니다. 하나님께서 자기들을 버리셨다는 절망에 빠진 백성들에게 ‘여호와께서 살아계시다’, ‘하나님께서 바벨론의 이방 땅에서도 함께 계신다’는 사실을 알려주는 것만으로도 이스라엘 백성들에게는 큰 위로가 되기 때문입니다. 이스라엘 백성이 당하는 침략과 망국의 아픔을 씻어주고 하나님은 영원토록 세계와 역사의 창조주로, 통치자로 존재한다는 사실을 깨우쳐 주는 말씀, 그것이 바로 ‘여호와 삼마’였던 것입니다.

역사는 가고 오지만 그러나 이스라엘의 하나님은 어제나 오늘이나 영원하신 분입니다. 그렇기 때문에 영원하신 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 어디에 있든지, 어떠한 형편과 처지에 있든지 늘 함께 동행해주시는 ‘여호와 삼마’의 하나님이십니다.

나의 삶의 현장에 오셔서 함께하시는 하나님, 바로 ‘여호와 삼마’의 하나님입니다. 오늘 하루도 어떠한 곳에서 무슨 일을 하든지 여호와 삼마의 하나님의 은혜로 인도함을 받도록 기도하십시오.

The word of Life

“The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. “And the name of the city from that time on will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”

In the Old Testament there appears many names that tell us about the character of God. “Jehovah Shalom” (The Lord of peace),

“Jehova Nissi” (The Lord my banner) “Jehovah Jireh” (The Lord provides), “Jehovah Rapah” (The Lord that heals) etc. These titles have been created by combing the word “Jehovah” with another word and clearly reveal the character and traits of God. Among these titles, “Jehovah Shammah” which means “the Lord is there” especially tells us about God who stays with his people.

“Jehovah Shammah”, Shammah” in Hebrew can mean “there, in that place or at that time”. Therefore “Jehovah Shammah” has the same meaning as the title “Emmanuel” which is used in the New Testament to refer to Jesus Christ as both signify the blessing of God that remains within the lives of saints.

In the main scripture, the prophet Ezekiel gave hope and courage to the Israelites who were in Babylon captivity spending each day in despair and anguish by proclaiming “Jehovah 삼마”. This proclamation of “the living God” was enough to comfort the Israelites who had been engulfed in hopelessness that God had forsaken them. “Jehova Shammah” was able to wash away the pain that the Israelites had experienced throughout the invasion and fall of their nation as well as reminding them of the fact that God exists forever more as the creator and governor of this universe and its history.

History comes and goes, however the God of Israel reigns forever moreyesterday and today. This is why God is “Jehovah Shammah” as he walks with the people of Israel wherever they are and whatever situation or circumstance they may be in.

Prayer Title

The God who comes to the present scene of my life and remains with me is the God of “Jehovah Shammah”. Pray that whatever you do, wherever you are that you will be led by the grace of God.
