겉옷을 가지고 오라!
딤후 4:13

생명의 말씀

“네가 올 때에 내가 드로아 가보의 집에 둔 겉옷을 가지고 오고 또 책은 특별히 가죽 종이에 쓴 것을 가져오라”

사도바울은 임종을 앞두고 디모데에게 특별히 ‘겉옷’을 가지고 오라고 명령하고 있습니다. 이는 겉옷이 단순히 의복의 차원을 넘어서 중요한 영적 의미를 갖기 때문입니다.

구약성경에서 겉옷은 경제적으로 영적으로 중요한 자산 중에 하나였습니다. 돈이 궁한 가난한 사람들은 겉옷을 전당 잡히고 돈을 빌릴 수 있었습니다(출22:26-27). 겉옷은 의복으로서뿐 아니라 가난한 사람들에게는 잘 때 덮는 이불 역할을 했기 때문에 필수품이나 마찬가지였습니다. 그러므로 저당 잡되 반드시 해지기 전에 돌려줘야 했습니다(신24:13,17). 그러나 겉옷은 그 끝의 네 귀퉁이에 달린 ‘술’ 때문에 중요한 영적 도구이기도 했습니다. 민15:38-40절 말씀을 보면 겉옷의 끝에 청색 끈으로 엮어서 단 술은 “여호와의 모든 계명을 기억하고 준행하고 하나님 앞에 거룩하게” 하는 역할을 합니다. 겉옷 끝에 달린 술을 보면서 방종과 죄악의 길로 가려던 마음을 고쳐먹고 율법을 기억하여 준행할 수 있는 일종의 영적 거울과도 같은 역할을 했던 것입니다.

또한 겉옷에 달린 이 술은 왕권을 상징하기도 했습니다. 다윗이 사울을 피해 도피하다가 엔게디 굴에 들어온 사울 왕의 ‘겉옷자락’을 벤적이 있습니다(삼상24:4). 후에 사울 왕은 다윗을 통해 이 사실을 알고 나서 “네가 반드시 왕이 될 것을 알고 이스라엘 나라가 네 손에 견고히 설 것을 아노니”(삼상24:20)라고 하였습니다. 옷단 술을 가진 자가 왕권을 갖게 된다는 의미를 사울이 알았기 때문에 한 말입니다. 이는 사울이 사무엘의 ‘겉옷자락’을 붙잡았다가 찢어졌을 때 사무엘 선지자가 “이스라엘 나라를 왕에게서 떼어서 왕보다 나은 왕의 이웃에게 주셨나이다”(삼상15:27-28)라는 말을 들은 바가 있습니다. 이러한 전통은 사울의 아들 요나단이 자신의 겉옷을 다윗에게 줌으로서 사울 집안의 왕권이 다윗의 집으로 넘어가게 됨을 나타내줍니다(삼상18:3-4).

이와같이 중요한 의미가 담겨있는 것이 겉옷입니다. 사도 바울도 평생 자신의 겉옷과 그 끝에 달린 술을 보며 하나님의 말씀과 자신의 사명을 되새기며 믿음의 선한 싸움을 싸웠기에 임종의 순간까지도 함께 하고 싶었던 것입니다.

사도바울이 마지막까지 챙겼던 것이 그의 겉옷이었음을 깨닫고, 오늘 나에게 신령한 겉옷이 있는지 점검하고 이를 통해 하나님의 말씀을 기억하고 순종하는 삶을 살도록 기도하십시오.

Bring My Cloak!

The Word of Life

“When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.”

On his death bed, the apostle Paul is giving Timothy a special commandment to bring his ‘cloak’. This surpasses the literal meaning of an outer garment but contains a special spiritual meaning.

In the Old Testament the cloak was a important asset both financially and spiritually. Poor people who were in need of money could take in pawn their outer garment and borrow money (Exo 22:26-27).

The cloak was considered a must-have necessity for the poor as it doubled as a blanket when they slept. Therefore, they could take it to pawn but must have it back before sunset (Deut 24:13, 17). The cloak was also an important spiritual tool because of the ‘tassels’ that were attached to ends of the four corners of the cloak. In Numbers 15:38-40 the tassels that were attached to the ends using blue string to tie a knot had the task of “remembering and carrying out all the commandments and being holy before God”. The tassels acted as a spiritual mirror so that whenever people saw the tassels they were reminded of the law and turned their hearts from the path of self-indulgence and sin.

Some tassels that were attached to the ends of a cloak symbolized royal authority. David cut off the tassels of King Saul’s cloak in the cave of Engedi when David was fleeing from Saul (1 Kgs 24:4). Afterwards, King Saul found out about this through David and said to David that “you will surely become the King of Israel and the nation of Israel will stand firm and upright in your hands” (1 Sam 24:20). This was because Saul knew that the one who had the tassels had the royal authority. Saul had heard this from Samuel

when he grabbed onto Samuel’s robe and tore the tassels; “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you” (1 Sam 15:27-28). This tradition shows how the royal authority was passed on from Saul’s household to David’s household when Saul’s son Jonathan gave his outer garment to David (1 Sam 18:3-4).

As such the outer garment has much significance. The apostle Paul fought a righteous fight of faith by looking at his cloak and the tassels at the end of it and reminding himself of the Word of God and his mandate throughout his entire life; thus he wanted to be with his cloak until the moment of his death.

Prayer Title

May we realize that his cloak was what the apostle Paul had took until the end and check if our spiritual outer garment is with us and pray that we can live a life of obedience remembering the Word of God.
