욥의 성품

욥1:1

생명의 말씀

“우스 땅에 욥이라 이름하는 사람이 있었는데 그 사람은 순전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자더라”

수많은 성경의 인물 가운데서도 그 믿음과 신앙이 단연 돋보이는 사람이 바로 ‘욥’입니다. 그는 풀무불같은 고난 속에서 정금같은 신앙의 인물로 인정받은 자였습니다. 성경은 그의 성품에 대하여 “순전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자”라고 말씀하고 있습니다.

순전하다는 것은 외식이 아닌 마음 중심에 진실성을 가진 것을 말합니다. 누가 뭐라고 해도 하나님 중심의 신앙으로 살아가는 자를 말합니다. 다음으로 정직하다는 것은 마음이 곧고 바른 것을 뜻합니다. 성경은 “정직한 자의 성실은 자기를 인도하거니와 사특한 자의 패역은 자기를 망케하느니라”(잠11:3)고 하였습니다. 끝으로 하나님을 경외하여 악에서 떠났다고 했습니다. 잠16:6에서 잠언 기자는 “여호와를 경외함으로 인하여 악에서 떠나게 되었느니라”고 교훈하고 있습니다. 욥 또한 “주를 경외함이 곧 지혜요 악을 떠남이 명철이라”(욥28:28)고 말하였습니다.

또한 욥은 “동방사람 중에서 큰 자”(욥1:4)라고 하였습니다. 하나님을 믿는 것도 남에게 뒤지지 않을 만큼 큰 자였고, 교회생활, 예배 드리는 것, 자식을 양육하는 것 등 모든 것에서 누구보다 뛰어난 ‘큰 자’였습니다. 뿐만아니라 재산을 봐도 큰 자라 할만큼 엄청난 부자였으며, 사람들의 존경을 받는 훌륭한 인물이었습니다. 양이 7천, 약대가 3천, 소 500겨리, 암나귀 500에 종도 많았다고 했습니다.

욥과 같이 말할 수 없는 극심한 환난 가운데서도 순전과 정직, 경외를 버리지 않고 끝까지 지킬 때 ‘큰 자’가 되어 재물과 온전한 신앙의 축복을 받게 됩니다.

The Word of Life

“In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.”

Among many people in the Bible Job’s faith and spiritual life stood out the most. He was acknowledged for showing faith like gold amidst blazing fire. The bible speaks of his character as “blameless and upright, a man who feared God and shunned evil”.

To be blameless means to have sincerity in the centre of our heart. It speaks of a person who lives through a God centered faith and to be upright means that the heart is steadfast and upright. The Bible states in Proverbs 11:3 that “the integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” It is written that they ultimately depart from evil because of their reverence toward the Lord. “And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).

Also Job was called the “greatest man of all the people in the East” (Job1:3).His faith wasn’t any lesser than other men and he was greater in his church life, worship, and in nurturing his children than other men. In addition he was an extremely wealthy man and was an excellent figure that was respected by people. He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. When you stay holy and blameless and keep revering God even during times of extreme hardship you will become a "great person" and receive the blessing of wealth and complete faith.
