암흑의 사흘길

행9:8-9

생명의 말씀

“사울이 땅에서 일어나 눈은 떴으나 아무 것도 보지 못하고 사람의 손에 끌려 다메섹으로 들어가서 사흘 동안을 보지 못하고 식음을 전폐하니라”

오늘 본문은 다메섹 도상에서 사도바울이 빛의 포로가 되어 쓰러지는 내용을 다루고 있습니다. 주님께서 사울을 빛의 포로로 붙잡은 것은 그를 꺾어 주의 종으로 다시 일으켜 세우고자 함이었습니다(행9:6).

하나님께서 불한당같은 사울을 꺾으신 것은 ‘공의’에 해당한다면 그를 바울로 새롭게 세워주신 것은 그분의 뜨거운 ‘사랑’이었습니다. 빛의 포로가 된 사울이 다메섹 도상에 엎드러졌다가 다시 일어났지만 그 때는 아무 것도 볼 수가 없었습니다. 방금 전까지 의기양양하고 건강하던 청년 사울이 한 순간에 눈이 멀어 다른 사람을 의지하여야 걸을 수가 있었다면, 당사자가 받았을 충격과 당혹감은 얼마나 컸겠습니까? 그런데 행9:9절은 전혀 예상 밖의 사실을 전해주고 있습니다. 사울이 ‘사흘 동안을 보지 못하고 음식을 전폐하니라’는 사실입니다. 그를 돕기 위해 주님께서 이미 ‘아나니아’를 예비해두셨다면(행9:10,18) 즉시 나타나 곤경에 처한 사울을 도와야 할텐데 사흘 동안 그는 나타나지 않았습니다. 그러면 왜 하나님은 사흘 동안이나 일체 침묵하셨습니까? 왜 사흘 동안 보지도 못하고 먹지도 못하는 처절한 고통과 고독 속에 홀로 내버려 두셨습니까?

그것은 사울을 새로 세워주기 위해서였습니다. 그리스도 안에서 새로운 피조물로 만들기 위해서 바울을 찢으시고 깨뜨리셨습니다. 바울의 거만과 교만을 완전히 파괴시키고자 암흑의 사흘길을 걷게 하셨던 것입니다. 사흘 동안 그에게 내미셨던 도움의 손길을 거뒀습니다. 그러나 홀로일 수밖에 없는 그 상황으로 인해 사울은 자신을 홀연히 휘감았던 빛의 의미를 깊이 생각하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 자신의 그릇된 과거를 뉘우치고 그가 가야할 참된 길에 대해 생각할 수 있었던 것입니다. 결국 사흘이 있었기에 옛 사람 사울은 죽고 새 사람 바울로 일어설 수가 있었습니다.

식음을 전폐하고 아무 것도 볼 수 없었던 삼일간의 암흑기간에 오히려 사도바울에겐 과거를 벗고 새롭게 거듭날 수 있는 갱신의 기회였던 것처럼 옛 사람은 죽고 새 사람으로 살아가는 한 날이 되기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

"Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.”

The scripture reading explains what happened after Apostle Paul fell to the ground when a light from heaven flashed around him in Damascus.

God took Saul into captivity by the light, transforming and appointing him as a servant of God (Acts 9:6).

God overturned Saul the bandit, because of God’s of “unbiased view”, God transformed Saul to Paul because of His great “love”. Saul who taken captive by the light went to Damascus fallen, but when he rose up he could not see anything. Young Saul who was triumphant and healthy suddenly became blind and had to rely on others to help him. Imagine the shock and embarrassment that Saul must have felt. However, in Acts 9:9, the unthinkable thing happened: Saul for “three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank”. God had already informed Ananias to help Saul (Acts 9:10, 18). Ananias did not immediately help him but came after 3 days. Then why was God silent towards Saul for 3 days? Why did God have Saul endure suffering and complete loneliness where he could not see, neither ate nor drank for 3 days?

God did this so that Saul would transform into a new man. God broke and ripped apart Saul to make him a new creation in Christ. The 3 days of darkness and silence completely overturned Paul’s arrogance and pride. For those 3 days, any helping hands were taken away from Paul.

However, during the loneliness, Paul deeply reflected on the sudden light from heaven that flashed before him. Paul repented for his hideous past and realized the road he was about to take. Ultimately, those 3 days allowed Saul to die and Paul to be born.

"Prayer Request"

Paul was without sight, food, and drink for 3 days. However, he threw out his past and was reborn. Let us pray that we can leave our past behind and live our life reborn in Christ
