행함으로 온전케된 믿음

창22:12-13

생명의 말씀

“사자가 가라사대 그 아이에게 네 손을 대지 말라 아무 일도 그에게 하지 말라 네가 네 아들 네 독자라도 내게 아끼지 아니하였으니 내가 이제야 네가 하나님을 경외하는 줄을 아노라 아브라함이 눈을 들어 살펴본즉 한 수양이 뒤에 있는데 뿔이 수풀에 걸렸는지라 아브라함이 가서 그 수양을 가져다가 아들을 대신하여 번제로 드렸더라”

믿음이란 그의 행함과 함께 일하고 행함으로 온전케 되는 것입니다(약2:22). 아브라함의 경우를 살펴볼 때 분명 그는 믿음의 사람이었습니다. 그러나 이삭을 제물로 드려서 행함으로 그 믿음이 인정받기 전까지 아브라함의 믿음은 아직 온전한 믿음이 되지 못했던 것입니다.

창세기 12장에서 아브라함을 부르신 이후 하나님은 세 번 나타나셔서 그에게 축복하셨습니다. 첫 번째는 창13장에서 동서남북의 축복을 허락하시는 가운데 땅의 티끌같은 자손과 그 자손이 머물 영원한 기업을 약속하셨습니다(창13:14-17). 두 번째는 창세기 15장에서 하늘의 별과 같은 자손과 그 자손이 머물 땅을 기업으로 주시는 축복입니다(창15:4-7). 세 번째는 창세기 17장에서 자손의 번성과 그들이 머물 영원한 기업으로서 가나안 땅을 약속하셨습니다(창17:1-8). 이 세 번의 축복의 특징과 공통점은 아브라함이 하나님을 믿음에 하나님께서 이를 의로 여기셔서 축복하셨다는 것입니다. 야고보 기자의 입장에 의하면 아직 아브라함의 믿음은 행함을 통해 온전해지지 않았기 때문에 하나님의 축복은 ‘약속(언약)’에 불과합니다.

그러나 이삭을 바침으로 하나님에 대한 믿음을 행함을 통해 입증한 이후에는 모든 차원이 달라집니다. 비로소 하나님께서 아브라함의 믿음을 인정해 주셨습니다(:12). 나아가 아브라함과 그 자손에 대한 축복이 단순히 ‘언약’으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 하나님이 당신 자신을 가리켜 맹세하시고 보증하신 확실한 축복이라는 것입니다(창22:16). 또한 기존의 축복에 “네 씨가 대적의 문을 얻고 네 씨로 말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 얻는다”(창22:17-18)는 내용을 더 얹어서 축복하셨습니다. 갈대아 우르에서 아브라함을 불러내시며 주신 ‘복의 근원’의 축복을 이제 그 씨에게도 허락하신 것입니다. 아브라함에게 씨앗처럼 숨겨져 있던 믿음이 행함으로 아름다운 꽃망울을 터뜨린 것처럼 온전한 믿음은 온전한 행위를 수반하며, 그 행위를 통해 믿음의 실체를 확인할 수 있습니다.

Faith That Becomes Complete Through Action

Genesis 22:12-13

The Word of Life

12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

13Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[]caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Faith works in accordance with action and through action we become complete (Pet 2:22). When we look at Abraham he was surely a man of faith however before he was deemed faithful after he gave up Isaac as a sacrifice, Abraham’s faith had not become a complete faith.

After God called Abraham in Genesis 12 He appeared to him three times and blessed him. The first blessing was in Genesis 13 where God promised Abraham the blessing of east, west, south and west and promised him that He’d give him an everlasting inheritance in which he and his descendents would remain (Gen 13:14-17).

Secondly in Genesis 15 God gave Abraham the blessing of a multitude of descendants as many as the stars and a land for them to reside (Gen 15:4-7).

The third blessing was given to Abraham in Genesis 17 regarding the prosperity of his descendants and the promise of the eternal residing place, the land of Canaan (Gen17:1-8). The feature and common ground of the third blessing was that Abraham believed God and God considered his faith righteous and blessed him. According to Peter, because Abraham’s faith hadn’t become complete through his actions, God’s blessings were only a promise or covenant.

However after confirming his faith in God by sacrificing Isaac all dimensions of his life change. Finally, God acknowledged Abraham’s faith (verse 12). In addition the blessings regarding Abraham and his descendants do not cease as mere “covenants” and are a definite blessing that God has sworn Himself and guaranteed (Gen 22:16).

Furthermore, God added on another blessing in Genesis 22:17-18 and blessed Abraham; “your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,

 God allowed the blessing of becoming “the origin of faith” that He gave to Abraham when He called him out of Ur of the Chaldeans upon his descendants as well. Just as Abraham’s faith that was like a little seed blossomed into a beautiful flower, complete faith carries complete actions and through those actions we are able to identify out true faith.

Do you have faith in God at the center of your heart? Pray that we may be like Abraham and not keep our faith buried in our hearts but by revealing it through our actions be acknowledged for our faith.
