한 영혼 전도에 지치고 피곤하시기까지

막4:35-38

생명의 말씀

“그날 저물 때에 제자들에게 이르시되 우리가 저편으로 건너가자 하시니 저희가 무리를 떠나 예수를 배에 계신 그대로 모시고 가매 다른 배들도 함께 하더니 큰 광풍이 일어나며 물 결이 부딪혀 배에 들어와 배에 가득하게 되었더라 예수께서는 고물에서 베개를 베시고 주무시더니 제자들이 깨우며 가로되 선생님이여 우리의 죽게 된 것을 돌아보지 아니하시나까 하니”

예수께서 이 땅에 오신 목적은 잃어버린 자를 찾기 위해서입니다. 누가복음 15장에서 잃어버린 한 마리 양을 찾기까지 99마리의 양을 들에 두고 이 골짜기 저 골짜기를 찾아 헤매는 목자가 바로 한 영혼을 찾기 위해 애쓰시는 주님의 모습입니다.

요한복음 4장에서 예수님은 사마리아를 지나가시다 야곱의 우물가에서 잠시 쉬기를 청하셨습니다. 성경은 이 당시 예수님의 피곤하신 정도를 다음과 같이 표현하고 있습니다 : “예수께서 행로에 곤하여 우물 곁에 그대로 앉으시니”(요4:6). 얼마나 피곤하셨던지 우물 가에 그대로 털썩 주저앉아서 휴식을 취하고 계십니다. 그러나 그 와중에도 예수님은 사마리아 여인을 전도하기 위해 집중하셨습니다. 피곤한 자신의 육신을 돌보지 않고 한 영혼 전도를 위해 온 신경을 집중하심으로 수많은 사마리아 사람들을 전도하셨습니다(요4:39).

오늘 본문을 볼 때도 예수님께서 얼마나 피곤하셨는지 배에 물이 들어와 배 안에 가득찰 지경에 이르렀는데도 배에서 주무시고 계셨습니다. 큰 광풍이 일어나서 물결에 출렁이는 배 안에서도 잠에 곯아떨어질 정도로 예수님은 한 영혼 전도에 애쓰셨던 것입니다. 뿐만 아니라 예수님은 오고가는 사람이 많아 음식 먹을 겨를도 없었습니다(막6:31). 한적한 곳에 쉬실 때도, 집에 들어가 계실 때에도 사람들이 끊임없이 몰려들었기에 예수님은 ‘식사할 겨를도 없이’(막3:20) 사람들에게 말씀을 증거하고 그들의 질병과 아픔을 치유해 주셨습니다.

당신이 피곤하여 쉬고 싶어도 잃은 양들을 볼 때마다 마음이 아팠습니다. 목자 없는 양같이 유리하는 이스라엘 백성들을 볼 때마다 다시 당신의 몸을 일으켜 어루만져 주시는 주님! “그 잃은 것을 찾도록 찾아다니지 아니하느냐?”(눅15:4)하시는 말씀처럼 예수님은 한 영혼 전도를 위해 정신적인 피로, 영적인 갈등, 육신적인 피로로 완전히 지쳐서 몸을 가누지 못할 지경에 이를 정도로 혼신의 힘을 기울이셨습니다.

한 영혼 전도를 위해 지피고 피곤하시기까지 힘쓰고 애쓰셨던 예수님을 본받아 오늘 하루도 잃어버린 양을 찾아 전도에 힘쓰므로 많은 열매를 맺기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The tiredness and exhaustion to evangelize one soul

Mark 4:35-38

The Word of Life

35That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Jesus’ purpose in coming to this earth is to find those who are lost. In Luke 15 it shows the shepherd who leaves his 99 herd of sheep going from one hill to another in search of one lost sheep. The shepherd symbolizes the Lord who works like the shepherd to find a single lost soul.

In John 4, Jesus decides to take a short rest at Jacob’s well whilst passing Samaria. The bible describes the how fatigued Jesus was through the following verse in John 4:6: Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. He was so tired that he sat down near the well and was resting however, whilst resting we see him concentrating on evangelizing the Samarian woman. By disregarding his physical body and exerting all effort in evangelizing one soul, he was able to evangelize many Samarian people (John 4:39).

Even in today’s main scripture reading Jesus was so tired that he slept up until the point where the boat he was in was full of water. Jesus had worked so fervently for the evangelization of one soul that he was able to sleep even amidst a storm. Moreover, Jesus had so many people to attend to that he didn’t even have time to eat (Mark 6:31). Whist resting in a quiet place and even when he went into his house, people continuouslygathered to see him thus he testified about the Word of God to the people and treated their illness and sufferings.

Even when he was tired and wanted to rest, whenever he saw a lost sheep his heart was filled with grief. The Lord raised his body to comfort the Israelites who were like stray sheep without a shepherd. Just as he said in Luke 15:4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? Jesus exerted all his energy to the point where his body was overcome by exhaustion due to mental fatigue, spiritual anguish and physical exhaustion.

Prayer Title

Pray that we will be able to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who worked and toiled to evangelize a single soul and bear an abundance of fruit by seeking out lost sheep.
