망각의 은혜, 기억의 사명
신32:7

생명의 말씀

“옛날을 기억하라 역대의 연대를 생각하라 네 아비에게 물으라 그가 네게 설명할 것이요 네 어른들에게 물으라 그들이 네게 이르리로다”

하나님께서 만약 우리의 모든 생활과 과거의 삶의 행적을 하나도 잊지 않고 기억하고 계신다면 누구도 감히 하나님 앞에 설 사람은 없을 것입니다. 그러나 감사하게도 하나님은 우리의 모든 과거의 삶과 죄악된 행위를 기억하지 않으시고 용서해 주셨습니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사!”(요3:16)라는 말씀 속에는 망각의 은혜가 담겨있습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 죄와 허물을 기억하지 않고 다 용서해 주시겠다는 것입니다. 예수님께서도 친구의 허물을 용서하되 “일흔번뿐 아니라 일흔번씩 일곱 번이라도 할지니라”(마18:22)고 말씀하셨습니다. 일흔번씩 일곱 번이라는 것은 산술적으로 490번까지 용서해주라는 말이 아니라 한계가 없이 끝까지 용서해주라는 말씀입니다. 우리가 다른 형제의 허물을 용서해줄 때 하나님께서도 우리의 죄를 기억하지 않고 용서해 주시는 것입니다(마18:35). 이러한 사람이 그리스도의 향기를 발하는 사람입니다.

반면에 성경은 우리에게 절대 잊어서는 안될 것들이 있다고 말씀합니다. 신32:7절 말씀에 “옛날을 기억하라!”고 명령하고 있기 때문입니다. 여기서 ‘옛날’이란 하나님께서 과거에 베푸셨던 기사이적과 은혜의 사건들을 말합니다. 신명기 말씀의 상황에서는 광야 40년 여정 가운데 하나님이 어떻게 이스라엘을 이끄셨고, 그들에게 복을 주셨으며, 어떻게 독수리 날개로 업어서 인도하셨는지에 관한 것들입니다(출19:4). 폭넓게는 우리의 삶 가운데 과거에 베풀어 주셨던 하나님의 은혜와 사랑에 관한 기억들입니다. 나아가 인류 역사를 통해 행하신 하나님의 놀라운 구원의 섭리와 사역에 관한 것들은 결코 잊어서는 안될 것들입니다. 이것은 오히려 사람들이 목숨을 걸고 기억해야 하며, 부모들은 자녀 세대들에게 가르치고 권면하는 가운데 하나님의 놀라운 역사를 ‘계승’해야할 사명이 있습니다. 그래서 믿는 성도에게는 망각의 은혜와 기억의 사명이 있는 것입니다.

<기도제목>

우리의 죄를 기억하지 아니하시는 하나님의 은총, 하나님의 기사이적과 구원섭리에 관해 결코 잊지 않고 기억하는 사명으로 오늘 하루도 하나님께 영광돌릴 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Word of Life

Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.

If God remembers all of our past actions throughout our lives then nobody would dare to stand before God. However, thankfully God does not remember our sinful actions of the past and forgives us. In John 3:16, “For God so loved this world!” contains the grace of forgetting. God is telling us that he will not remember our sins and mistakes and forgive us.

Jesus also told us to forgive the mistakes of our friends “not seven times, but seventy seven times” (Matt 18:22). To forgive 77 times, 7 times does not add up to 490 times but signifies an unlimited number of forgiving until the end. When we forgive the mistakes of our brothers then God will also not remember our sins and forgive us (Matt 18:35). Such is a person who emanates the aroma of Christ.

Conversely, the Bible tells us there are thing that we mustn’t forget. It is because in Deuteronomy 32:7, it is commanding us to “remember the days of old!”. Here, ‘the days of old’ refer to the miracles and moments of grace which God shared in the past. The book of Deuteronomy is about how God led the Israelites throughout the forty year wilderness journey, how He blessed them, and how He placed them on wings of eagles and led them (Exo 19:4). In a broad sense it is a memory of the grace and love of God. Furthermore, it is a reminder that we must not forget God’s amazing work of providence carried out through rhe history of mankind.

People must remember this even if it costs them their lives, and parents must uphold the responsibility in teaching their children’s generation and whilst rebuking them ‘pass on’ this amazing work. Therefore to the believer, there is the grace of forgetting and the mandate of remembering.

Prayer Title

Today, pray that we may not forget the grace of God that does not remember our sins, and uphold the mandate of not forsaking the miraculous work of God and His providence so that we can glorify God.
