세상 모든 사람의 가는 길
왕상 2:1-3

생명의 말씀

“다윗이 죽을 날이 임박하매 그 아들 솔로몬에게 명하여 가로되 내가 이제 세상 모든 사람의 가는 길로 가게 되었노니 너는 힘써 대장부가 되고 네 하나님 여호와의 명을 지켜 그 길로 행하여 그 법률과 계명과 율례와 증거를 모세의 율법에 기록된대로 지키라 그리하면 네가 무릇 무엇을 하든지 어디로 가든지 형통할지라"

다윗이 임종을 목전에 두고 아들 솔로몬에게 말하되 “내가 이제 세상 모든 사람의 가는 길로 가게 되었노니”(왕상2:1-2)라고 하였습니다. 세상 모든 사람이 가는 길이란 바로 사망의 길입니다. 여호수아 또한 임종을 앞두고“나는 오늘날 온 세상이 가는 길로 가려니와”라고 고백한 바 있습니다. 이는 인간의 유한성을 일깨워주는 말씀입니다. 아무리 강건하고 화려하고 권세있는 삶을 살았다 해도 하나님이 부르시면 인생은 ‘그림자’(시144:4)와 ‘안개’(약4:14)나 ‘바람’(시78:39)처럼 사라지고 마는 허무한 존재입니다. 그러므로 사람은 자기가 살아가는 시간과 공간 속에서 인간의 유한성을 깨닫고 겸손히 하나님 앞에 서야 합니다.

강철 왕 카네기가 병이 들었을 때 의사들 30여명을 불러놓고 10년만 생명을 연장시켜 주면 2억불을 주겠노라고 당부했다는 일화가 있습니다. 70년대에 2억불이면 엄청난 돈입니다. 그러나 억만금이 있다 해도 사람이 자신의 생명을 조금이라도 연장하거나 좌우할 수 없습니다. 인간의 생명과 삶은 오직 하나님의 주권 속에 있기 때문입니다(대상29:11-12).

다윗은 고백하기를 “주 앞에서는 우리가 ... 나그네와 우거한 자라”(대상29:15)고 하였습니다. 이 땅에서 아무리 오래 산다 해도 세상이 있는 날이 그림자 같아서 머무름이 없다고 했습니다. 이처럼 시간은 하나님만이 사용하시는 인간통치의 섭리도구이기 때문에 사람은 이를 만들거나 빌리거나 파괴할 수 없습니다. 오직 하나님이 정하신 날 수대로, 연수대로 살다가 돌아갈 뿐입니다. 모세가 말한바대로 “우리의 모든 날이 주의 분노 중에 지나가며 우리의 평생이 일식간에”(시90:9) 다하는 것이 인생입니다. 이는 인생이 범한 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판의 결과입니다. 죄의 삯은 사망이기 때문입니다. 이를 깨달을 때 밤의 한 경점같이 짧은 인생 속에서 우리는 ‘유한성’을 깨닫고 하나님 앞에 겸손하게 설줄 알아야겠습니다.

<기도제목>

세상 모든 사람이 갈 수밖에 없는 죽음을 통해 인간의 유한성을 깨닫고 더더욱 하나님 앞에 겸손하게 설 수 있도록 기도하시기 바랍니다.

The Word of Life

When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go

David spoke to Solomon on his death bed “I am about to go the way of all the earth” (1 Kgs 2:1-2). The path that all the people on this earth take is the path of death. Joshua also confessed before his death “I am about to go the path that the entire world is headed”. This is a Word that awakens the limit of mankind. No matter how healthy, magnificent and powerful lives we may have lived, if God calls us then our lives disappear like a ‘shadow’ (Psa 144:4), ‘fog’ (James 4:14) and ‘wind’ (Psa 78:39).

Therefore mankind must understand his limitations within the time and space he dwells in and stand before God with humility.

When the ‘king of steel’ Andrew Carnegie became ill, he called together 30 doctors and told them that if one of them could extend his life for another ten years he would give them 2 million dollars. In the 70s 2 million dollars was a huge amount of money.

However, even if a man has millions of dollars, he cannot extend the longevity of his life nor can he control it. This is because the life of mankind lies only within the authority of God (1 Chr 29:11-12).

David confessed, “we who stand before God ... in a dwelling place of a sojourner” (1 Chr 29:15). No matter how long we live on

this earth, our days on this world are like a shadow. As such, time is a tool of providence that only God can use to govern mankind thus men cannot make, borrow or destroy it.

We are only able to live the days that God has decided for us, according to the years and return. Just as Moses said “All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan” (Psa 90:9). This is the result of God’s judgment for our sins as the wages of sin is death. When we understand this, we are able to realize the ‘limits’ of life and stand before God with humility.

Prayer Title

May you realize the limits of mankind through the path of death that all people must undertake and pray that you can stand before him with humility.
