뒤에 남은 자국은 오직 예수

딤후4:7-8

생명의 말씀

“내가 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니 이제 후로는 나를 위하여 의의 면류관이 예비되었으므로 주 곧 의로우신 재판장이 그 날에 내게 주실 것이니 내게만 아니라 주의 나타나심을 사모하는 모든 자에게니라”

한 사람의 삶에 대한 평가는 그분이 운명할 때의 태도를 통해 알 수 있다고 합니다. 독일의 대 문호 괴테는 임종시에 “아아 답답하다. 어둡다. 아아 답답하다. 어둡다. 나에게 빛을 달라”는 절규를 끝으로 생을 마감했다고 합니다. 살아서는 화려한 문학가의 삶을 살았지만 그리스도의 흔적을 가지지 못한 그의 생애였습니다. 반면에 감리교 창설자인 요한 웨슬레는 임종시에 가족과 많은 목사들이 모인 가운데 “제일 좋은 것은 하나님이 나와 함께하는 것이다. 하나님 감사합니다”는 말을 남기고 평안히 갔습니다.

오늘 본문의 사도바울은 어떠합니까? 자신의 생이 얼마남지 않음을 알고 70대의 노사도는 자신의 삶을 정리하고 있습니다. 결코 죽음을 두려워하거나 회피하려하지 않고 당당하게 자신이 살아온 삶을 고백합니다. “내가 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰다”(:7). 이것이 바울의 흔적입니다. 삶의 뒤안길에 남겨진 예수 그리스도의 자국입니다. 그의 앞길에는 죽음의 고통이 아니라 의의 면류관이 예비돼 있습니다. 바울은 다메섹 도상에서 이방의 그릇으로 선택받은 이후로 운명하는 그 순간까지 그리스도의 흔적을 지닌 사람입니다. 자신을 위해서가 아니라 죽는 순간까지 남을 위해 축복했던 사람입니다. 얼마나 당당하고 멋있는 삶입니까?

“나를 믿고 나를 본받으라” 이것이 사도바울이 운명 직전에 우리에게 증거하는 말씀입니다. 자기 자신이 예수를 믿고 예수를 본받는 삶으로 일관하였기 때문에 자신을 믿고 자신을 본받는 것이 곧 예수를 믿고 본받는 삶이 되기 때문입니다. 온갖 고난과 어려움으로 점철된 그의 삶이었지만 오직 예수의 발자취만을 따랐기에 절대 후회가 없는 삶, 오직 예수, 오직 십자가, 오직 예수의 흔적만 있는 바울의 삶입니다.

오늘 하루도 후회없는 삶을 위해 사도바울처럼 오직 예수 그리스도만을 따르는 삶이 되기를 위해 기도하십시오.

2 Timothy 4:7-8

The Word of Life

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

A person’s life can be “evaluated” by observing their actions facing death. On the death bed of the great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Geothe he reportedly cried out complaining about how dark and stuffy it is and asked for light. He lived an extravagant literary scholar however his life was void of any evidence of Christ. In contrast John Wesley the founder of the Methodist Church died a pleasant death quoting that “the best thing is God being with me. Thank you, God”.

What about the apostle Paul in today’s main verse? Aware of his limited time to live we see the 70 year old apostle completing his life. He isn’t afraid of death nor is he trying to escape from it and confidently confesses of the life he has led. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (verse 7). This is the evidence of Paul. This is the trace of Jesus Christ that has been left in the backwaters of life. In his future path lies not the pain of death but the crown of glory. Paul was a man who carried with him the evidence of Christ since he was first chosen as a gentile vessel in the city of Damascus until his death. He was a man who did not live for himself and blessed others even until the point of death. How great was this man’s life?

“Believe in me and follow in my footsteps”. These are the words that the apostle Paul is testifying to us before his death. He is saying this because he lived a life that followed in the footsteps of Christ and therefore believing him and modeling his life is like believing Jesus and following in his footsteps. Although Paul endured many sufferings and hardships throughout his life he only followed in the footsteps of Jesus thus his life had no regrets and was only filled with the traces of Jesus and the cross.

Pray that today we will live a life without regret by only following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ like the apostle Paul.
