인자는 머리둘 곳이 없다

생명의 말씀

“예수께서 이르시되 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 거처가 있으되 오직 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다 하시더라”

여우나 공중의 새와같은 짐승도 거할 집이 있지만 창조주 되신 우리 주님은 머리 둘 곳이 없다고 한탄하고 계십니다. 그렇다면 예수님의 이러한 한탄의 배경과 의미는 무엇일까요?

이는 예수님 당시 어느 누구도 예수님을 깨닫고 믿는 사람이 없었던 데서 나온 한탄입니다. 첫째는 예수님의 친속들이 그를 믿지 못하고 미쳤다고 했으며(막3:21), 예수의 친 형제들 또한 믿지 않았습니다(요7:3-5). 그 결과 예수님은 유월절에 예루살렘에 올라가시되 사람들의 눈을 피해 몰래 가셔야만 했습니다(요7:10). 둘째는 제자들도 예수님을 믿지 못했습니다(요6:60-61,666,71). 믿지 못했을뿐 아니라 예수를 떠나 물러갔으며, 열둘 중 하나인 가룟 유다는 스승을 팔기까지 했던 것입니다. 이러한 상황을 미리 아시는 주님께서는 어느 누구에게도 당신의 생각을 펼쳐 보일 수 없고, 의지할 수 없었기에 ‘머리’ 둘 곳이 없다고 한탄하셨던 것입니다.

사도바울은 특별히 예수님을 가리켜 ‘교회의 머리’(골1:18)라고 말씀하고 있음을 볼 때, 예수님이 거하실 집은 바로 교회이며, 믿는 성도들이 예수님께서 거하실 신령한 교회입니다(고전3:16,6:19). 이것은 마치 야곱이 돌을 베개하고 누웠던 장소가 하나님의 집, 벧엘이 되었던 것처럼 각자 우리를 성전삼아 예수님께서 거하실 때 우리는 신령한 베개, 참 성전이 될 수 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 ‘머리 둘 곳’이란 신령한 교회로서 ‘믿는 성도’들을 가리킵니다.

야곱은 광야 한 가운데서 돌을 베개하고 잘 때 그곳에서 하나님의 전을 발견하였습니다. 하지만 예수님은 머리 둘만한 곳, 즉 베개하고 누우실만한 참 성전된 믿음의 성도들을 발견하지 못했던 것입니다. 이 말씀을 통해 “예수님, 이제부터 제가 당신의 베개가 되어 드리겠습니다” 고백하는 가운데, 예수님께서 여러분의 마음 가운데 거하시기에 부족함이 없는 신령한 성도가 되시기 바랍니다.

‘머릴 둘 곳’이 없어 한탄하시는 주님의 처량한 모습을 마음에 품고, 주께서 온전히 거하실 수 있는 참 성전, 신령한 성전이 될 수 있기를 위해 기도하십시오.

The Son of Man has No Place to Rest His Head

“Jesus replied, Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Jesus our creator is lamenting at the fact that he has no place to lay his head when even the foxes and birds have homes. Then what is the background and meaning of his lamentation?

Jesus lamented as nobody in Jesus’ times believed him or realised who he was. First, Jesus’ relatives did not believe him and said he was crazy (Mark 3:21) and his siblings also did not believe in him (John 7:3-5). As a result Jesus went up to Jerusalem at the time of the Passover in secret so he’d not be seen by people (John 7:10).

Secondly, even the disciples could not believe Jesus (John 6:60-61, 66, 71). Not only did they not believe Jesus but they left him and Judas Iscariot who was among the twelve sold his teacher. Jesus lamented that he had no place to rest his head as he was already aware of this situation and could not reveal his thoughts to anyone nor rely on anyone.

Especially when we see the apostle Paul refer to Jesus as “the head of the church” (Col 1:18), we see that the church where Jesus resides is the church and the saints are a spiritual church in which Jesus resides in (1 Cor 3:16, 6:19). Just like the place where Jacob rested his head on a rock became “Bethel” when Jesus considers each of us as an individual temple and resides in us, we are able to become a spiritual resting place and a true temple. Thus, “a place to lay his head” is a spiritual church and refers to the saints who believe.

Jacob discovered the temple of God in the middle of the wilderness whilst sleeping, using a rock as a pillow to rest his head. However, Jesus could not discover a place to rest his head; hence he could not find a saint of faith who he could use as a pillow to rest. Through this word may our confession be that we will become Jesus’ pillow and become saints that are not lacking as a resting place for Jesus.

Pray that this sorrowful picture of Jesus lamenting because he had nowhere to lay his head may remain in your hearts and that we may become a true, holy temple that the Lord can reside in.
