믿음의 계승, 축복의 대물림

창48:15-16

생명의 말씀

“그가 요셉을 위하여 축복하여 가로되 내 조부 아브라함과 아버지 이삭의 섬기던 하나님, 나의 남으로부터 지금까지 나를 기르신 하나님, 나를 모든 환난에서 건지신 사자께서 이 아이에게 복을 주시오며 이들로 내 이름과 내 조부 아브라함과 아버지 이삭의 이름으로 칭하게 하시오며 이들로 세상에서 번식되게 하시기를 원하나이다”

창세기를 볼 때마다 우리는 아브라함의 뛰어난 믿음과 엄청난 축복이 자녀들에게까지 고스란히 이어질뿐 아니라 점점 더 흥왕하고 형통할 수 있었던 비결이 무엇일까 관심을 갖고 생각해 보게 됩니다. 이삭에서 야곱, 요셉으로 갈수록 점점 더 형통하고, 폭발적으로 번성하는 아브라함 집안의 축복의 비결은 도대체 무엇일까요?

그것은 오늘 제목처럼 ‘믿음의 계승, 축복의 대물림’이 있었기 때문입니다. 아브라함 가문의 전통은 부모들의 뛰어난 믿음을 자녀들에게 전수해주고, 물질과 재산이 아니라 하나님의 축복을 대신 자녀들에게 물려주는 대물림이 있었다는 것입니다. 야곱이 자신의 손자 에브라임과 므낫세를 축복하는 가운데 요셉에게 계승해준 믿음은 자신의 출생부터 현재까지 나를 기르시고 인도하시고 축복하신 분은 하나님이라는 것이었습니다. ‘나의 남으로부터 지금까지 나를 기르신 하나님’(:15)이라는 고백이 이를 잘 나타내 주고 있습니다. 또한 “나는 죽으나 하나님이 너희와 함께 계시사 너희를 인도하여 너희 조상의 땅으로 돌아가게 하시려니와”(:21)라는 고백을 통해 자신의 생애를 뛰어넘어 영원히 후손들에게 축복하실 하나님께 자식을 맡기는 축복의 대물림을 발견할 수 있습니다.

또한 창세기 49장에 이르러서는 손자들을 축복한 야곱이 임종을 앞두고 열 두 아들을 일일이 축복하는 장면이 나옵니다. 야곱 자신도 아버지 이삭으로부터 받은 하나님의 축복을 자손들에게 계승해주고 있는 것입니다(창27:4). 요셉도 자신의 임종을 앞두고 모든 형제에게 이르되 “나는 죽으나 하나님이 너희를 권고하시고 너희를 이 땅에서 인도하여 내사...”(창50:24)라고 하였습니다. 아버지 야곱에게서 배운 믿음을 또다시 자녀들에게 계승시키며 하나님의 이름으로 축복하는 신앙의 좋은 전통! 이것이 바로 믿음의 명문가문 아브라함 집안의 형통의 비결이었다면, 오늘 여러분들은 자녀에게 무엇을 물려주고 있습니까?

<기도제목>

자녀에게 재산을 물려주는 것은 자녀를 위한 것이 아니라 망치는 것이라고 합니다. 아브라함의 집안과 같이 믿음과 하나님의 축복을 물려주는 신앙의 부모가 될 수 있기를 기도하십시오.

The Accession of Faith, the Passing Down of Blessings

The Word of Life

Then he blessed Joseph and said, “May the God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, the Angel who has delivered me from all harm —may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.”

Whenever we read the book of Genesis we wonder what the secret is to how Abraham’s great faith and even greater blessings are passed on to his descendants and how their lives continue to flourish and prosper. From Isaac to Jacob we see gradual prosperity, so what is the secret behind Abraham’s house hold and the blessing they received?

This was because just like the title of today’s sermon there was an “accession of faith and passing down of blessings” within Abraham’s household. Traditionally, Abraham’s household passed on the outstanding faith of the parent to their children and consequently passed down the blessing of God rather than passing down a money and materialistic inheritance. While Jacob was blessing his grandsons Ehpraim and Manasseh, he confessed that the one who raised, led and blessed him throughout his life from the moment he was born until now is God. “The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day” (Gen 48:15). Furthermore, through the confession in Genesis 48:21 “I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of  yourfathers” we are able to discover the inheritance of blessing that surpasses Jacob’s life when he entrusts his descendants with God who will bless his them too.

Moreover in Genesis 49 we see Jacob who had blessed his grandchildren on his death bed blessing each one of his 12 sons. This is Jacob passing down God’s blessing that he received from his father Isaac (Gen 27:4). Also before Joseph died he said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land…” (Gen 50:24). If it was Abraham’s household tradition and secret to its prosperity to pass down the faith learnt from his father Jacob to his descendants and blessing them in the name of God, then today what are you passing on to your children?

Prayer Title

It is said that passing on materialistic inheritance to our children will not benefit them but rather wreck them. Like Abraham’s household, pray that you may become a parent that passes down faith and the blessing of God.
