He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty (Ps 91:1).
When it says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,” the word “Most High” is Elyon(עֶלְיוֹן) in the original Hebrew, meaning “the One of supreme honor, the only One above heaven and earth, the First, the foremost, and absolute excellence.” The “shelter” is seter(סֶתֶר) in Hebrew, referring to a secret place that no one can know about. It is a refuge known only to God, not something openly revealed, which He shows us in the time of the final tribulation (Ps 32:7; 119:114; 27:5; 31:20).
In terms of the temple, it is like the Most Holy Place, where only the high priest could enter once a year—a place of God’s presence and protection that cannot be shaken by any circumstance. The NLT translation of Psalm 91:1 records it as, “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” It means that, like a hen gathering her chicks under her wings, God gathers us under His protection in the midst of tribulation so that no one can come near us. He also gives hidden manna and a white stone to those who are hidden in His secret place, and our name is written on that white stone (John 6:48, 50; Rev 2:17; 19:12). At the end of the age, those who dwell under the shadow of the Most High will receive a new name (Rev 3:12).
